Opinions on PE Buyout Soundstream

I wish I could find a new set of Exact 10" subs to match my BNIB Exact 5.3 components Im going to be installing in my doors.

A few observations here... the listed specs on the PE webpage are incorrect... it is impossible for Qts to be higher than Qes. BassBox lists the Qes as .39 and the Qts as .36.

The 6.6mm Xmax combined with the .36 Qts would seem to make it a fine choice for a small ported box run off of ~300 watts, but not the best choice for a sealed enclosure (unless power is under ~200 watts). There are similarly priced drivers out there that are capable of displacing a lot more air...

If you want old school SS you want the Reference series, not the Exacts. The Exacts came out with the Rubicon line of amps and were third generation SS subs.
IIRC the exacts were out before their rubicon series was introduced. And Im positive the Exact was their top of the line, at least for a while. The Exact vs Alchemy debates raged on and on, I doubt that would have been the case had they not even been the best in their line-up at the time.

The Exacts and the Rubicons came out right about the same time. The Rubs were the first amps with the new red SS logo and the Exacts had the same logo. The Reference line predates them by 5-6 years (1993-1998). The Exacts were not around when the SPL series came out. I know that for a fact. That was in late '95. The Reference were still the top of the line at that time and remained so for at least 2 more years. The Rubicons came out in '98. The Exact subs and speakers came out about that time to replace the Ref line. Honestly not sure if there were any changes other than cosmetics made. If you look at the two drivers, they look identical. The Ref 12 was CSRs "reference" sub for several years in the mid 90's and with good reason.

I actually still have issues of CSR and CA&E from back that far. Even farther if I dig deep enough.
Cool. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I threw all mine away years ago. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

helotaxi time line is about right, live through it. Exact's came out late '96 into '97, CSR Exact review '97 (dig that one up and post). Hard to find any Ref's subs that have made it, reason I still run a Exact 12 to this day. The Rubicon amps and Rubicon Subs shared the same round dust cap logo. Exacts have a the word "Exact" and Soundstream under it on the cap.

So the Exacts were out with the reference amps.
There might have been an overlap of one model year. It is also possible that hte exacts came out early that year and the Rubicon amps laterthe same year, leaving the Ref amps still available at the time the Exacts were brand new. I was out of the loop as far as car audio goes (no car for about 8 mos) about the time all of this went down. Gap in my magazine collection right at that time, too.
The basic point still holds, though. The Reference line of subs were the original SS subs and predate the SPL series by at least 5 years. The SPLs predate the Exacts.
