OPINIONS: 2 15" L7s or 3 12" L7s

I know everything is based on install, and all of the little things many people don't realize, but I was wondering, Would 2 Kicker L7 15s be louder, or would 3 Kicker L7 12s be louder? I like SQ ofcourse, which I actually don't think that the L7s have very bad SQ(which im happy with).... but SPL is my goal. Would be ported either way, wouldn't mind sealed but I would lose a ton of SPL so thats most likely not an option. Box size is not a matter really... would be running at least 750-1000 to the 15s(each), and like 550 to each 12...As right now I have an 8.5ft^3 box in my trunk so box shouldn't be a problem. Thanks in advance...

The (2) 15" drivers should technically be louder than the (3) 12" drivers because there is more cone area (in terms of Sd) present with (2) 15's than there is with (3) 12's.

Actually, that's entirely false. Two 15's absolutely DO have more cone are than three 12's. See the lesson in mathematics provided below....more displacement = more output (given all else is equal).

The Sd of a typical 12" driver = 480cm^2

So 480 * 3 = 1440cm^2

The Sd of a typical 15" driver = 810m^2

810 * 2 = 1620cm^2

So, the two 15's have more cone area than the three 12's. Since these subs all have the same Xmax, we don't even need to calculate total displacement to know that the 15's will have more linear output than the three 12's. If we were talking about two different models of subs, then we'd need to multiply those Sd's by their individual excursion limits to determine total displacement. Sorry noob, but I had to correct you.

No right now I dont have either of these setups, want to try em out to see what I like and everything, I have 2 Audiobahn AWT12X subs brand new that I want to sell to buy sum kickers... anyone interested? Either way... I hope I have enough room and everything... I have to decide what to do.

Thanks though to everyone... any other input welcome!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I would suggest u get the 2 12's. Cause with the power u have; 3 12's would'nt get enough power imo. Cause the 12's are 750-1500w and two would pound pretty hard in the right ported box. but if u can run 1000w each sub i would go with the 15's.

Since the 12s would only be getting 550 each, then id do the 15s. but if the 12s would be getting power like the 15s are, then 3 12s all the way.

2 15s have the potential to be louder regardless. More speakers doesn't mean louder. The 15s will out displace the 12s.

Oh and cpierce, you got

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif They all don't have the same x-max...The 15 has 16.3 of xmax the 12l7 has 12mm of x-max.

Then my matematical lesson above proves without a shadow of a doubt that the 15 L7's will out displace the 12 L7's all day long.

Mackenzie, just because you send more power to a speaker doesn't mean that its somehow going to be exponentially louder. If you are limited by displacement, then you will be limited by how loud you can get. Show me some sort of proof that more power is all that is needed and I'll leave you alone.
