Old technology vs. New technology

Subwoofers are less effecient now than back in the day.........

But most handle tons more power
Hope your joking..
And that means what?

It means subwoofer manufacturers finally got smart. Cars are not large to begin with in terms of mounting stereo cabinets in, and the trend has for them to get smaller and smaller. Hoffman's Iron Law tells us: efficiency, low freq extension, small enclosure... pick 2. So manufacturers started making subs to fit smaller enclosures (the original Kicker round solobaric pretty much started this trend), but this meant they miust either sacrifice low freq extension, or efficiency. Now you understand why subs are generally less efficient than they were a decade ago. It has nothing to do with build quality, or technology reverting backwards.

Seems like I just explained this a couple weeks ago in the previous old vs new tech thread... that included the same Linear Power pictures, Jerk saying the same thing that pisses people off, and the same incorrect conclusions about subwoofer efficiency trends. Do you guys just not listen to each other, or do we all just like hearing ourselves talk this much?

To all who read this thread, what are your opinions about amplifiers using the older technology in the 1990's vs the newer technology vs. 2000's? Does it always mean that older is better? There are a lot of people on this forum who have bought their amplifiers in the 2000's and have used them for the last 5-7 years even though they are made in China, Korea, Taiwan, etc. A few people will stand by their Kicker, JL Audio and other brand amps made in Korea or Taiwan. What is your opinion?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Is there any reason a foreign made amplifier is inherently of lesser quality than a USA made amplifier?

I like the new SPL sub technology a whole lot more than the technology of the 90's. So much more cone area was needed back then to be equivalent of what you can do now with 1 subwoofer. There are some exceptions to this, but subwoofers are better in general now, imo.

It's also nice to see class d's more widely available. I used to have an old US Amps USA-400; that thing drew so much **** current that it's not even funny. I can run over twice the amount of power now and have the same effects on my electrical system with an efficient class d amp.
