Old School vs. New School

I used to be into the old school mentality until I realized that the newer amplifiers were more efficient, had less noise issues, and generated much more power. Now, nothing in my two vehicles is older than 5 years old, whereas I am running a custom servo and amplifier combination in my wife's vehicle.

I guess it all boils down to end-user preference. If one wants to run the best technology that was available 15 to 20 years ago, I won't berate them for that.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of lies and misconceptions with some of the overpriced old school gear available on the market and one has to use a little bit of common sense to see through the hype and the bullshіt. There was this one brand in particular, where I was told that they were grossly underrated and could be perfected with modifications. For example, their 4x50 watt amplifier had a 25 amp fuse yet boasted a rating of 325x2 when bridged. Sorry, but that 325x2 is a pipe dream unless they figured out a way to violate Ohm's Law and self-generate power with 25 amps of fusing.

Now the same repair tech who had me sold on that brand of amplifiers is telling people to let their ears be the judge because it has been proven over and over again that there is NO WAY that particular brand will make the power numbers they claimed. I just hope no one lets that tech con them into having their amplifiers modified because that is more snake oil that will provide an inaudible power difference, change the amplifier's sonic signature, and reduce its useful life.

Oh yeah, there was a point to this. Just be careful and ensure that lies propagated from the past don't cloud your judgement. I wouldn't want to see anyone else being nostalgic get burned like I did. Finally, I do find it funny how marketing, lies, hype, and bullshіt tend to cloud one's judgement allowing them to toss logic and reason aside because I made that mistake myself three years ago when I was feeling nostalgic.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/redface.gif.62fdbfe1a101588a808c4cff71bcb942.gif

Chris, it sounds like you woke up and smelled the coffee like I did.

I most certainly did. When an amplifier's power supply audibly sags while handling frequencies above 80 Hz, it is time to run something else.

To those who say that old school amplifiers are easy to repair, I'll retort with this.... Is it worth paying $1 or more per watt of old school power just because it is "easy" to repair? Well, that is assuming one doesn't burn any hard to find FETs, drivers, finals, or any other part that doesn't have a modern substitute. Hell, I am having a hard enough time sourcing some 105 degree Celsius 3300 uF 50v axial capacitors for my old school Orion amplifiers. It won't be pretty, but it may be time for me to convert them to radial caps.

Some of that 'old technology' in high end equipment can still keep up & even surpass some of today's.. especially in SQ & full range clean sound

Paying $1 a watt was prices new back then. I payed $500 per each of my two 500 watt RF amps back in the mid 90's, bnib from a dealer. But Id hardly get anywhere near that for them these days. If you are using some Linear Power amp and subsequent LP fanatic as your reference point to pricing, I'll simply say that is an exception to the pricing rule, not the norm. You can buy most 'old school' amps used for very reasonable prices these days if you are patient and do even a little looking around.

This. LP fanatics are crazy, and their actions should not be taken into consideration when judging the "old school" group. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I cringe when I see what Ell Pee amplifiers go for but you are right, deals are out there to be had. I picked up a pair of mint condition Orion HCCA 225 Digital Reference amplifiers last year for $200 on another forum. I also picked up one of the 2 ohm stable Power 1000 bd amps for $50 from a friend because he lost some of the set screws. Granted some of my bargains weren't for old school gear, but, having money and being in the right place at the right time can surely get one great gear for a great price.

Truth.... They are the biggest group I know of who will toss logic and reason aside to believe in hype, lies, and bullshіt. They also have problems with their amplifiers and are grateful that the same shop who serviced the products in the 80s is still in business and carrying on the name...

Your 2 RF Punch 150 amps don't count, those amps are special. I have 2 in my garage that I would never sell. Those are some of RF best past and present.

I would have known you would quote & reply to me Mike..especially when I said "clean sound" & your screenname is cleansoundz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbcool.gif.25d3f515a7f948dd6be51428263071ef.gif
