Old School vs. New School

I still use a first generation Audiocontrol EQX in my current setup //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif I also was using a "The Hott Setup" amp for my highs until just recently (any oldschooler knows about this amp being rare and made by orion). I mix up old school shit with new equipment, for example for my main amp I roll a Atomic 5kw.

I remember running two bazooka 8's off a profile amp back in 1990....I thought I was the shit. Doesn't mean I wanna roll with that now!

I like a lot of new stuff and a whole bunch of the old equipment. I ran everything from Pyle, Proton, Hi-Comp and then finally Linear Power. I ran Linear Power for years until I eventually went with Lunar amps. Many people these days will not pay $ 400+ for a 500 watt rms amp like the Lunar L1500, but for me I would rather pay more for better quality. Each to their own

I would have to say that those tubes worked very well depending on the set-up. I had a friend that had a pair of the 8's on a Punch 150 around that same time period and it slammed, it was in Toyota single cab truck.

I think it depends on what you want. An SQ guy doesn't care about many of the on board features of an amplifier if he/she has and out board processor that has a digital eq/time alignment/higher quality xovers they will by pass what comes on the amp. There are a few amps like zapco that has high grade features but overall those are costly by the time you buy 2 or more. I think overall tweeter are better and subs are better but old school Image Dynamics IDWs set up in near IB systems still destroy most of what is out there. For the average listener/basshead I think things have improved in efficiency and higher power output, but a muddy woofer is a muddy woofer regardless how much power it has or can handle.

This is kool. I'm glad people are talking about their experiences with the old stuff vs. their opinions with the new stuff. You guys are talking about how oldschool amps and such were less efficient and heat up but were much better quality in terms of craftsmanship... newschool is more efficient and puts out a ton more power for cheap... subfrontier said no one wants to pay $400+ fopr a 500w amp... well I think there are people here that would pay a big price for a GREAT product... a product that is the best of both worlds. Imagine seeing an oldschool setup with gizmos and gadgets everywhere, but those gizmos and gadgets are all top quality and win competitions... do any companies do this anymore? High output amps with external crossovers and whatnot?

Most every amplifier I know of has a boost and a crossover on it. Most all of your serious sq junkies bypass those features and goes with an outboard processor like a bit one, rf360.2, or one of the many alpine outboard units.Hell the new pioneer stage 4 deck has that all built in. How good it is compared to other processors as of yet I do not know.

i like the new subs and head units(for mp3 and adjustability, we all know os denon is the shhhh) and old amps and processors, i like the control of the os processors and eq's, and the amps just seem to have a better sound to me poersonally, not saying you cant get that with new stuff but there just isnt enuff companies making them today. yea and people do argue about which is better. i have and have had many amps new and old. in my old work car i did comparing with amps. out of 6 amps i tested on my highs. the top two imo were os. also used new rf vs old rf and new crossfire vs old crossfire. and you can notice a differance i dont care what you come up with mathmatically. try it yourself dont take my word for it. the five amps were 1 punch 200 dsm, 1 punch 2002, crossfire vr302, crossfire cfa 202, audio art 752(blue), and hifonics zues(maxxonics). here is was i came up with

the best sounding amp was the audio art buy a good bit next was the dsm followed by the rest. the crossfires really were hard to tell apart. the 202 was even about as powerful as the vr302.

now all tests were done full range using no xovers etc.

well you can argue points all day. but for my opinion i will run os class a or a/b unless i was into spl comps then i would go with new class d for subs. but in one of my cars im running a os us amps 400x pushing 2k-2400w to my re sx 10s and two os mtx amps on my highs. thunder 304 that does about 100x4 @4 and a thunder 252 for my tweets thas does about 50x2@4. so im pushing a good 2400-2900w roughly. h/o alt with bat in trunk and 1/0 welding cable. very very slight dimming running full tilt at idle. when driving i get no dimming. so if i need over i would say 3k or so i would probably use newer class d but if i dont need to then im sticking with my os amps. if you do your own test do it right, not on subs. rull range on a good set of coax or full range woofers. allow nothing but those speakers to play in the car. use the same songs for all amps etc.

We will probably never see amplifier builds like this again.

Most amplifiers of today share the same design, Do not get me wrong there are some really well made products toady but nothing like there was back in the day.

Some will agrue that today's amplifier technology is better and to a point they might be right but there is a reason why some of these amplifiers of yesterday are still selling for big money and still being used over new stuff.

Those amp guts look shweeet! I started this thread just for learning purposes and hoping people would post their oldschool pics lol... Didn't want to start any "arguements" lol so I'm glad this thread is goin the way its goin. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Do you guys know if there's a thread for posting oldschool setup pics?

There are some in all the major car audio forums. I recommend doing a search

On a personal note.. I am still faithfully running 2 RF Punch 150's (3rd gen from 89, just before the HD's). Also, 1 15" Old School CV 'Vega' series.

I love this set up & constantly amaze the new generation with the clean output!

IMO, I started with Old School & I will end with Old School. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsupwink.gif.129404938effda6ad9cca39e7f4b58a3.gif

There is two ways to look at this. Your way which is very valid for those with that know how and/or enjoy it. However, the manufacturing of these boards has gotten so much cheaper, that for the price of having someone fix an amp (if you lack the skills) you just replace the **** thing. You take the good with the bad with anything and this is no exception. Back then boards were more expensive because there was more human handling in the manufacturing process. Now not so much and the cost reflects it. Just like with most things, they build them to throw away when done.
I agree completely.
