Ohm load question

Is it safe to run a 1ohm amp @.67? Will the impedance rise enough for it to level out to a 1ohm load? The amp is an Xsite XAD2K 2000watt amp. It does close to rated and never gets hot, but will I destroy it trying to run 3 D4 subs? Help please

there are alot of amps out there stable below what there rated at. i think you will be fine with imp rise but im not guaranteeing anything. ive never used there amps so i dont know how reliable they are or how well built they are

It'll obviously work, but the question is can your amp handle it?

Try it and find out, but you better have a good electrical supporting it.

no, I actually think it will be fine, but I don't know, and you don't know, so don't do it if you can't replace the amp.

ok well please explain this. I have 3 D4 12s, all the coils read right at or at 4ohms. When I bridge all channels I get a .9 load on my dmm, but on the calculator the math comes out to a .67ohm load. Why is this? This is before the box

Could be your leads on your meter or just could be a resistence factor thats making it read higher

I was gonna try to run them on a 1ohm amp, but now I'm not so sure. Guess I'll have to try and find some D2 subs. I don't see how that small of a difference would really hurt though

Well, not all coils are exactly 4-ohms or whatnot. What you get off your DMM will be the proper resistance that the amp sees. DMMs were designed to get a proper reading regardless, so any resistance that the DMM puts out, it equates for when giving you the number. The calculators are in a perfect world, when not all coils are perfect. Most people's impedance isn't what they actually say it is. It's close enough for us to round it up (or down) to a nice whole number.

If your DMM reads 1, the resistance is 1.

And OP: What you can do is set your gains properly on the amp, wire it down to 1-ohm, and play it at low volumes, and begin to go up while touching the bottom side of the amp (or wherever the board is closest to.) If it begins to get hot, turn it off. Period. The down side to this is that it might blow a FET after extended periods of time playing. But if you're worried about it playing properly... don't even do it. It's not worth it. Get another D4, or get rid of one.
