I have had some noise issues since I installed my 3rd amp. All weekend I have been dealing with trying to figure it out. I assumed it had to do something with the introduction of the 3rd amp, but after using muting plugs on all amps, I realized it was the subwoofer connection. I just couldn't narrow it down to the specific point that was causing the noise.
So, I went outside with my DMM in hand. Needed to test the resistance of the RCA shields per the suggestion of someone on DIYMA forum. Grounded one lead, and tested the resistance of one of my RCA's on the subwoofer amp. Notice the amphasis on "one". I had 50ohms and it jumped up to 70 ohms and around. NOT GOOD. I checked the one next to it and had a huge amount, too.
Then I realized something..."hey, I'm checking my pre-out RCAs". Then something else hit me ... I had been pluggin in the RCA's to the pre-out of the subwoofer amp throughout the weekend. I laughed out loud at myself. Went into the garage, came back with some RCA cables, connected them to the processor and the correct set of RCA's on my amp. Turned the car on...noise gone. In the weekend mess I just wasn't paying attention to the RCA plug-in I was using.
lesson: always plug RCA's into the correct input!
