Its kind of a regional thing. For example, the southern half of MN is shotgun only, while the northern half is rifle. And call me a bumpkin, but I've never heard of anyone hunting deer with a shotgun. Noone in my family ever did. I guess you concieveably could, but I've never tried it.
With a 100 grain, then of course it will. But if you could also shoot 100 grain bullets out of your 308, they would be nearly as fast as the 270. What grain are you shooting in the 308?I bet my Winchester 270 will do better than 3400fps with 100 grain. Fast as hell, deadly accurate. Beats my 308 by about 800+fps.
150, or 180. I see your point. Either one does drop velocity to around say 2700.With a 100 grain, then of course it will. But if you could also shoot 100 grain bullets out of your 308, they would be nearly as fast as the 270. What grain are you shooting in the 308?
After seeing this I have to admit I was wrong on the knockdown power. I was looking everywhere for the energy ratings and couldnt find them. I think we just have two different hunting styles. I personally enjoy sitting up against a tree and waiting in a drawl. I dont need range, infact some of the shots Ive taken if I was using a high power with a scope I probably wouldnt have seen anything but brown. If I was to sit in the open or on a hill or something I would NEED a highpower.Heres a little ballistics lesson..
This is one of the best slugs for deer hunting..12 gauge.. 3"

This is the bullet I shoot in my high-powered rifle.. (.300 Winchester Short Magnum)

I think the slug lacks a little in energy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif and a lot in velocity...
But don't get me wrong, I am not saying a slug isnt good for deer hunting... Within 100 yards it is plenty capable of dropping the largest bodied whitetail in its tracks.. All you gotta do is put it through both shoulders.. Id take a 3" slug anyday in close thick brush over a high-powered rifle shooting ballistic tips.. ballistic tips are a joke in brush. .Hit one limb, and that bullet is fragmenting..
I was just showing that the slug has no where near the "knockdown" power..
At least you got the rack. Like somone mentioned earlier, I guess the size of alot of these deer depends on the geographic location. Where in from in Petersburg, WV, large 10 point kills usually make the paper. Usually a little under 200 lb white tail. I'm not sure if it's way up north in Maine, or down in Florida, but in one of those 2 areas they have extremely small deer, no bigger than a large dog. This made me cry............ My wife hit this one with her car. But there are still at least two bucks on the land this one came from and I believe they are the same blood lines. Now if only they would let me hunt there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif
