How much did that deer weigh!!! Looks like a cow compared to our deer.. Bucks RARELY weigh over 200 pounds here.. That buck in that pic goes a dam good 250+...

Also, how wide was the buck that u killed?? Dam nice deer..
i have seen bigger on the side of the road up here.

Picture of the farm. Great hunting. Also, here's a pic of Grandad's famous 14 point.

I have'nt hunted in about 5 years. Shot a nice 10 point about 8 years back, which was my crowning achievement. I'll see if I can dig up some other photos. I personally hunt with a Winchester 270. Shoots at **** near 4500 fps, dead accurate, drops'em quick. I quit using my 308. I got tired of hitting branches and having the bullet blow up.

LOL... Highly unlikely.. Unless you are handloading some of the hottest .270 bullets known to man..

Either that was a typo or you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. Your 270 is no where near 4500 fps.

And the 308 thing, thier bullets don't react any different than any other bullet when they hit branches. In fact, they stay together quite well when they hit stuff. The last deer I shot I accientally shot the tree, which was about 4" in diameter, in front of the deer and the bullet went through the tree and hit the deer and killed it. Maybe you should be waiting for a better shot if you have to worry about hitting branches anyways.

Heres a little ballistics lesson..

This is one of the best slugs for deer hunting..12 gauge.. 3"

This is the bullet I shoot in my high-powered rifle.. (.300 Winchester Short Magnum)

I think the slug lacks a little in energy //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif and a lot in velocity...

But don't get me wrong, I am not saying a slug isnt good for deer hunting... Within 100 yards it is plenty capable of dropping the largest bodied whitetail in its tracks.. All you gotta do is put it through both shoulders.. Id take a 3" slug anyday in close thick brush over a high-powered rifle shooting ballistic tips.. ballistic tips are a joke in brush. .Hit one limb, and that bullet is fragmenting..

I was just showing that the slug has no where near the "knockdown" power..

You are correct in that the caliber doesn't matter.. However, the bullets you shoot do react differently. If you hit a limb with a ballistic tip, that bullet is fragmenting upon impact.. No telling where the bullet will go.. Hit that same limb with a good bonded bullet like a Nosler Partition or Core- Lokt, and its a lot less likely to stray away.. However, you are still gonna be lucky to hit where you are aiming no matter what caliber rifle or bullet you are shooting if you start hitting limbs.. Yall would be amazed how much a little limb can throw a bullet off..

For example, last year I hit a limb when I thought I had a perfect broadside shot on that buck.. The bullet still hit the deer.. But nowhere near where I was aiming.. Hit him in the rear leg.. Luckily he turned towards me and I could finish him off.. Would of hated for him to have suffered with that broken rear leg..

You're right, I just didn't want to get into explaining that whole thing. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

also, did you get those charts off of federal's site? I was looking on Remington's site for ballistics tables for slugs and they didn't have them. I looked on Winchester's site too but their site sucks and I guess I forgot about Federal.

Maybe he meant .177 and not .270 . //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Couldn't fathom shooting a deer with one of those hornets . Squirrels were bad enough. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yeah I got them off Federal.. They have a NICE ballistics section on their site.. All caliber Rifles, Shotguns, Pistols...

And call me a bumpkin, but I've never heard of anyone hunting deer with a shotgun. Noone in my family ever did. I guess you concieveably could, but I've never tried it.
In some Midwest northern states the only gun season they have is shotgun only.. I believe Illinois and Michigan are both like that.. Helps keeping too many deer from being killed..
