I've seen it myself... then again not sure if that's optimum box design even but I've helped guys test boxes like that that don't gain from pushing the box forward anyway and seen some fairly respectable numbers coming out of that style.
from my experience being crowded like that gets louder than the port being too far away from the hatch as long as you are at least the port height/width's distance away. Any less than that will lose output. For aeros its the radius of the diameter port used was the threshold. SQ didnt change much at all just mainly output.
