Nightshade v.2 Prototype Preview Picture

I'm just pleased as punch that you decided to go with a full compliment of shorting rings in these. Think you could set up a 15" with a nice single-spider soft suspension for a low Fs and large Vas? Cms of around 250 to 450 would be swiggety-sweet. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
I'm gonna be after a set of those aluminum spacers very soon also. Along with those baskets and cones I wanted forever ago. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
I haven't built a sub yet with just one of my spiders... but that might be close to your 250 goal. How low do you want the Fs to be ?

**** its all good i seem to be having problems getting subs lol lately
I'll have the Z v.2 out by then... but it won't handle what you are talking about //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I see power handling has been increased quite a bit over the v.1s, will my good ole' SAZ-3k still be a good match? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Oh yah... power handling is up but power requirement is NOT.

Of course not //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif, just trying to see if it'd be worth upgrading amps, but most I'd upgrade to is probably 3.5k and since I no longer go for numbers, not worth the money to me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif The V1 with 2H2S spiders can take the power great, though it heats up a bit so I'm hoping with the v.2 I can bang on it all day //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Coil cooling on the v.2 is MUCH better... and the coil is nearly 50% longer. So you will be good to go //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Anywhere below 25 or so would be nice.

Is the surround going to prevent that from happening or is it thin enough that it wouldn't be the main component of the compliance when using a soft spider? A nice soft rubber one would be nice but I know you usually don't have those when I ask. Obviously, I'm after a nice quiet stroke with a lower mechanical power handling than thermal, which you've probably already gathered.

I have a few cones with softer surrounds here I could use -- I can use the same cone as the Z15 v.1 woofer... it's Fs was 28 Hz with dual spiders (obviously softer than the Nightshade units).

I bet with that cone, one Nightshade spider, with the v.2 coil (fairly heavy by comparison) the Fs would be way down there.

such a big motor but you only want a single spider, i almost cried. it's a spl woofer ment for several thousand watts. build for a daily beating and you want to baby it? it's like buying a corvette and driving 55mph...

If we wanted to get really fun with it -- the top plate is tall enough to do an underhung design with around 2" P-P linear excursion //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif It would retain 95% BL for about 1" P-P

We don't all beat on our equipment and do the SPL thing. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

There's something to be said for a driver that will allow you to reach the mechanical limits way before you will ever run into thermal compression. My favorite octave is from 12 to 24 so I like drivers that can stroke very far very quietly. I also like my drivers to respond to very low levels of power input and be articulate at quiet levels as well as loud levels. A driver that needs 3k to get going is completely useless to me.

In the end, my enclosures will determine the power handling and that's the way it should be for music, IMO.

Now you're speaking my language. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsupwink.gif.129404938effda6ad9cca39e7f4b58a3.gif

Let me see if I can sell some more gear and we'll talk shop when I have some green for you.

Thanks for the info, Jacob.

A Single 1-ohm 4-layer copper coil @ 25mm winding width would do it under-hung. Less than 1 mH inductance without shorting rings.

I modeled up other coils but they don't fill up enough room in the gap to have decent motor force as the gap was made for a big bad-boy 8-layer coil //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Could probably up it to 8 layers @ 25mm WW and still come out beautifully with the rings in place. 2ohm would be optimal for for me.

If I used a flattened copper winding I could probably fit a Dual-4 in there with 8-layers of copper wire @ 25mm WW to get your 2 ohm load. It is a hair too tight with round wire.

Sweet. Roughly how many pennies do I need to save for that version?
