Nfl 2010

Martz doesnt not necessarily use a traditional running package. Alot of the screens, slip screens and bubble screens are done in lieu of runs. As long as the RBs are gaining chunks of yardage in the air, they will be fine. However, as the season wears on and if they hope to compete in the playoffs, the will need at least an adequate running game

I believe boldtothemax was referring to the fairness of the rule, not whether or not the ref technically made the correct call per the rules.
Using Detroit's coach's reply as testament isn't a good measuring stick to gauge the validity of the rule. Of course he stated the ref made the right call, in his position he had to. To have said anything else would have been called whining. He did what was politically and professionally correct, he backed the ref. Im not even saying that's why the coach said it, for all I know he likes the rule. But using his official stance/comment is not an unbiased answer. But that's all irrelevant anyway, because like I said above, I dont think bold was making an argument against the referee's judgment.
All I can say is that a "vague" rule was upheld and it gave my favorite team a win. I'll take that win with a smile...

Agreed, on all counts. I don't have a problem with using Forte's receiving skills as a way to create mismatches and to somewhat hide the fact that we can't run the football. I do think it'll catch up with us eventually too. In ways, it already has. That goalline stand vs Detroit was pathetic...

True..Forte and Taylor are both capable runners, and I do believe that if Cutler keeps playing well, teams will back off the line and drop guys in coverage, which opens up lanes. If they still have issues running after a few more games, it will be an issue. Martz has the tendancy to become crazy pass happy when run game falters

I have doubts about our RBs effectively running the ball even with opposing defenses playing the pass. Our offensive line is THAT bad, man. In all honesty, I'm scared for Jay. It won't shock me a bit if he's badly injured at some point this season.

Wow, if Im not mistaken, the bears were kind of torn between him and Jeff Otah. Otah has not been great, but decent for Carolina..What allowed you guys that pick though, was the front offices preference of Forte. Alot of people wanted the bears to draft Mendenhall, especially being that he played at Illinois, but the front office was very enomored with Forte and knew he would be available later. They used what people were hoping would be the Mendenhall pick for Williams, and picked up Forte later....Its always cool to revisit draft strategies years later

Forte in the second paid off in spades. Williams in the first, not so much. Greg Olsen, while a decent player, was a wasted 1st round pick as well. Jerry Angelo has neglected our offensive line for FAR too long and in the last couple of seasons it has taken it's toll. The man's terrible draft strategy can be explained in two words. Dan LeFevour.

LeFevour was drafted in the 6th round, so it could be argued that we didn't miss out on much by picking him. That's a fine argument on the surface, but when you look at the situation a little deeper you realize it was another Angelo failure. LeFevour was a nice "project" pick. I was actually happy about getting him. But the thing is, we didn't need a project QB in Chicago. We JUST GOT Jay Cutler and he's supposed to be our guy for the next decade or so, and Hanie is a decent project himself. What did Angelo hope to accomplish with the LeFevour pick?

In the end, it was a wasted 6th round pick that could've been used on a project player for our terrible offensive line. LeFevour was cut, prematurely I might add, and didn't even pass waivers. I'm sure the coaching staff had hopes of keeping him on our practice squad, but Cincy pounced on him. LeFevour could possibly be a quality starting QB in the NFL after a few years of coaching. How stupid will Angelo look when/if Dan LeFevour successfully transitions into a solid QB? Instead of being the guy known for a great late round pick, he'll be looked at as the guy who pissed away another decent QB that he had almost nothing invested in.

Is Olsen really a wasted pick though? The guy has probowl skills, its just that they have never made him the focal point of the offense. Martz system is where TE's go to die. If it makes you feel any better, I am a 9er fan and we used the 6th overall pick on Vernon Davis, Olsen was what, about the 24th? And I dont know how much better Davis is then Olsen other then the fact that we have finally figured out how to use Davis...To me, an elite TE is about as valuable as a elite WR. Every year, WR's go higher then Olsen did, yet very few of them even end up as good as an elite TE like Dallas Clark, Gates, Gonzales etc.....I like Olsen, they just need to find a way to get him about 100 targets a year

No Olsen is not a wasted pick IMO. He has got to be one of the best "receiving" tight ends in the league. He is am extremely versatile weapon that the other teamsmost certainly have to gameplan against. As far as tight end usage in the Martz system, Martz has already shown a good bit of "tweaking" of his system, Olsen will get plenty or balls thrown at him this season.

Chris Williams is a HUGE dissapointment. IF it wasn't for our line, we might be the favorite to take the north.

I disagree there, i think GB would still be the favorite. I will say, however, that if Brett does not get his act together, Minnesota is in jeopardy of being passed by the Bears for what would likely be a wildcard spot

I said :might", lol. Wishful thinking.

Minnesota is looking pretty darn bad. I honestly don't think they will be able to get it together in time. Brett favre not doing any kind of training camp, the chemistry with his receivers is way off. Sydney Rice being gone is a huge blow. I think the bears will finish ahead of the vikes this year but not GB.

Mike Martz coming to Chicago is why Greg Olsen's talents are now, in my opinion, wasted.

I'd love to see Martz getting Olsen involved, but so far he hasn't really done so. Olsen isn't getting nearly as many looks as he should.

Chris Williams is awful. Plain & simple. We need to target offensive lineman throughout the draft next season. I want us to take at least 3 linemen...one of them being Williams' replacement.
