newbie question. Dual voice coil 4 ohm. Can i use just one to make 4 ohm load?

I have two 12" subs that are dual voice coil subs. I used both of them in a box that im not using anymore. I want to make a single set up for a different truck. Is it possible to just hook the subwoofer to one voice coil to get the 4 ohm load that I would like to use for my amp. Or do you have to use both coils. I don't want to get a 2 ohm load. Thanks for any info.

I have a Hifonics brutus brz1200'1 mono amp.

The amp will give at 4 0hm load at 450 watts

2 ohm load at 900 watts

1 ohm load at 1200 watts

Im thinking 900 watts at 2 ohm would blow the sub so im trying to stick on a 4 ohm load.

I don't understand why you would do that if your amp is 2 ohm stable and just keeping it turned down.

I just didn't know if using 900 watts on a 500 watt subwoofer would be ok for it. Also hoping that my stock altenator would no have an isssue with 450 watts vs 900 wattz. If 900 watts will be on on the sundown E-series i will use it, just didn't know if it was gonna be ok.

Better off to use both coils on sub.if only using one coil then the subs rms is cut in half and 450 would be too much also.i'd go with both coils and just keep levels a little lower.

If you run only one of the coils the power handling of the woofer is cut in half anyway so you anything over 250w would be 'overpowering' it.

Also, just because your amplifier is rated at 900w at 2 ohm doesn't mean it has to output 900w at 2 ohm...set the gain appropriately and you can have anywhere from 1w to 900w at 2 ohm (including exactly what your woofer is rated for, 500w)
