Hi Guys,
I'm trying to get a parts list together for my '03 G35 Sedan, so I can get the parts ordered. I'm going to have a well reviewed local shop install everything.
Goals:
*Under $1000 for sure, installed
*Good sound quality, specifically smooth frequency response, and deep bass extension. Loud isn't important.
*Robust iPod interface, USB thumb drive support, AAC and MP3
*At least a HU, sub, and amp
Install for the G35 is a bit of a nightmare and requires some special parts from JDM. This is the main reason I'm taking it to a shop! These install parts could add ~$150-200 to the install, according to my research.
So, the first big question is head unit.
I hear that Pioneer's 2008 models have very good iPod controls. Specifically, you can use the iPod's controls (or 1g iPhone, in my case), instead of the wonky UI on the head unit. This is an absolute must-have for me. I can't *STAND* using an on-deck UI.
I was steered towards the P6000UB as a great single-DIN head unit. The shop quoted me $225, which isn't too bad. It seems like a well-liked unit.
Now, the other option would be to get a P400UB. I can get one online for ~$140 shipped. It seems to have the same iPod interface, and looks to be a good model. No flashy OLED display, but I don't really care about that.
Aside from the different look (and arguably inferior display), what are the differences between these two head units? Any other options I should be seriously considering? Also, can any units play MP3 / AAC off a DVD-R?
For reference, I plan on eventually building out this system to have two discrete amplifiers, one for the sub and one for components up front, possibly 3-way speakers in the back.
Now for the other parts - the sub and amp. I'm totally out of touch. I do know I want a single 12", not sure about ported or sealed. I don't need a lot of power (was previously happy with ~100WRMS on a Polk 12" circa 2003), but I do like to feel the beat. Suggestions? The guy I talked to quoted ~ $500 for sub/amp/enclosure/wiring/install, +/- depending on component selection. Some good "bang for your buck" suggestions?
If I can afford it, I'd love to do new 3-way speakers as well. The OEM speakers honestly aren't too bad - and I'd be okay with keeping them for now and upgrading later.
All told, if I go with the P6000UB, assume $225 for that + $500 for sub/amp/box, plus an extra $150 for installation bits and pieces, and $100 for labor, I'm looking at ~$1000. Sounds like a lot for HU+Sub+Amp
