New system...$1000

Hello all! For a long time now i've been wanting to put a system in my 06 Jetta TDI. I've spent the past several days reading forums and figure it's time I post.

To start off with, I listen primarily to metal and rock. I'm all about SQ!

What makes my situation a bit more unique is that I might have access to a Best Buy discount (I know they sell mostly junk, but if i can pick up an amp or something there to save money for other parts that'd be great).

So, I humbly ask for your collective wisdom to help me put together a system priced around $1000. It will include the following:

Subs: Enclosed box, space is not an issue. I don't need bass that will rattle buildings as I drive by, just tight, clear, punchy bass. Open to suggestions on 2x10, 1x12, 2x12 etc. I've read great things about Image Dynamics (IDMAX = teh ***) and JL Audio(w6v2). Could I buy either of these at ~=$350 and still have enough for everything?

Components for front: Friend suggested Infinity Kappa's, which would be nice since i could get them at best buy. But again, open to suggestions. I've read alot more about subs then I have speakers.

Speakers for back: Kappa's again...(or stay with stock to spend more elsewhere?)

4 channel amp for speakers: Match it up with speakers

amp for sub/s: Match it up with subs

I'll be getting down and dirty and doing the research necessary to install everything myself, so installation is not a part of the $1000. Also, I'm not buying a deck. I'm happy with the stock 6 cd changer. It's not as pretty, but I'll have less chance of getting broken into. Plus it's more money towards nicer parts.

I'd also be willing to look for used equipment.

Thanks for your time.

get a nice 6.5 comp set, prolly rainbow slc's, good for the money

sub, idmax is nice, jl w6v2 is nice, i have one

comps - 230

sub jl w6v2- used on forums for about 220ish + shipping

navone LOC so you could run rca's to ur amps - not sure how much

amps... you'll have around 500, there r lots of different ways you could go

- xenon x600.1, xenon x100.2

- Kicker stuff

- look into Rockford Fosgate stuff from BB, see what kind of deal you can get

leave the stock speakers in the rear to save some cash

box will be around 50 to build on your own...

just my suggestion, others will chime in

$339 shipped for 12w6v2 new in box but no manufacturer's warranty. I bought one of mine from them and could not be happier. You can find them used for cheaper.

I would say spend more on two better components up front and skip the back speakers. Also get a good 2 channel amp instead of a 4 channel. Both of these will save you money and will net you better gear for your dollar.

Perhaps others can help you with choosing front speakers. Rainbows seem to get a lot of love around here and ca.com has a member that is a dealer (6spdcoupe). He can point you in the right direction based on your budget and needs.

Since you are using your stock deck I would recommend a LOC from autosound2000 at http://autosound2000.com/adaptor_products.htm .

Best of luck. $1000 can be a tight budget for an entire system when you start off with 12w6v2.

stock decks **** beyond all, having a new one wont get your sh!t stolen, being a fool will

contact The Car Stereo Store in SL for a ported box, should be less than $200, 1.75 cubes @ 30hz would be nice

if you have money left over, try another US Amp at http://www.ikesound.com for the CDTs

This is all great!

Right now i'm leaning towards SLC 265's and an ID Max 12 v.3

I'm going to try and get pricing on the Rockford Fosgate's at BB...but that US Amp is one hell of a deal for 700 watts. On amp specs, why does it not show 2ohm and 4 ohm bridged? It'll just say "bridged".

Nauc, why do you suggest ported over sealed?

Oh, and do i need a power block and ground block if i have two amps? Or could i get 2 x single amp kit?

it says "700 Watts X 1 @ 4 "

ported get louded, so at lower volumes, less distortion... the more a sub moves, the more distortion

I can't believe what I just read..... stir the BS pot again please, it's getting a little thick.

talking to me???

"There is a common misconception that ported designs produce more distortion than sealed boxes"

from http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=147

"low-frequency reinforcement is one of the big advantages of a well-designed ported system. Using the work of the rear of the cone in a constructive manner means that a gain in efficiency of about 3dB over a broad band in the sub-bass range can be achieved as compared to a sealed enclosure using the same woofer. The other big advantage is that the interaction of the port, the enclosure and the speaker's resonant characteristics also reduces cone motion and, therefore, distortion at higher volume levels in the frequency range controlled by the port. The down side is that at frequencies below the tuning of the port, the speaker gradually begins to act as if it were not enclosed at all"

to simplify

at xmax, a sub puts out about 10% distortion

so if a sub in a sealed box hits 130dbs at xmax, ported it could hit about 133dbs

and since a sub in a ported box takes a sh!t load of power to reach xmax, at 130dbs, it will have less distortion than the sealed setup naturally

waht you need would be, power wire, ground wire, fused distro, ground distro, fuses, and rcas from the LOC to the amps...

usually u could get most, if not all, from a dual amp kit, look into those

something like that would work

....

he's right, you'll get less distortion at the expensive of F/R. Frankly, the lessened distortion isn't a big deal, even trained ears would have issues picking up subbass distortion below 8%
