New sub for thunderform?

Here's my situation. I have a 2000 Jetta and just installed a JL 500/5 amp and a Thunderform sub box (I'm currently in the market for some good 6.5" comps if anyone has some for sale in the $75-150 range, PM me).

I used a Rockford 3Sixty.2 for OEM integration because I didn't want to lose my use of my Phatbox DMS system, otherwise I would have upgraded to a better HU. Anyway, the sub is a little anemic and the installer said that the level is very low so I have plenty of spare power for a better sub.

I would like to know if it's worth keeping my Thunderform and upgrading to a low profile driver Some of the brands/models I have found are: Earthquake SWS-10, Rockford P3, Power Acoustik STW-10 (never heard of these guys), Kicker CompVT, and then some Kenwood and Pioneer stuff.

I was told by someone that should know, the Rockford P3 is a very nice sub and if I go with that, there are options such as DVC 4ohm or 2ohm, so I would need to know which of these to get for my single sub install

Thanks, Ron

the JL 500/5 is rated to do 250wrms between 1.5-4ohms SO, as long as you get a sub within that range ur fine

IMO, just a regular single voice coil @ 4ohms is fine OR even a dual voice coil @4ohms to give you a final impedance value of 2ohms is okay, but the SVC is the easiest route

if you are stickin with mainstream brands...go with the fosgate or kicker, stay away from power acoustic

Thanks. Do you think you can tell which would be better, a Kicker CompVT or Fosgate P3? Would they be better than the MTX that came with the box (Thunder 4500 4ohm) or should I plan on selling the box and building a custom 12" enclosure? BTW, the thunderform is 0.8cf sealed.

Thanks

quite honestly my friend....you gotta go with what you think sounds good, now a days there are so many brands far off from mainstream stuff that sound pretty incredible BUT ultimately its your ears that have to be please

IMO, i have used kicker branded subs in the past and for the price you cant go wrong, pretty durable sub and it sounds great in a variety of enclosures.

as far as ditchin your thunderform box, if the specs of the new sub match the volume of the thunderform, its worth trying out and seeing how it sounds, thats what i would do, if it doesnt sound good, then build a custom box if you want

Sure, that's understandable, but since I will most likely be purchasing off of the 'net, I was hoping to get something that sounds good on the first shot without having to buy-return-buy-return, etc.

Thanks for the help.
