New speakers clipping/distorting

Okay, dumb question #101: I just got through replacing my stock speakers with a set of four 6.5" Pyramid 6577 3-ways (rated at 400w), and they clip and distort (i.e. cut out, buzzing sound) at volume levels that the stock speakers handled just fine. What is causing this problem? Do I need an equalizer/amp or other piece of equipment? Also, FYI, I'm running a Kenwood MP225 head unit (50w x 4) with no amp or equalizer right now.

From reading other posts in this forum, I gather that Pyramid is not exactly considered to be top quality stuff, but I would think that they'd be able to at least handle what I was throwing at the stock speakers. The Pyramids might be crap, but if at all possible, I'd like to make my system work with them for now. If I need to pull them (or if it's going to be cost prohibitive to make it work), I'll pull them, and just chalk it up to experience.

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.........

Thanks!

get rid of the speakers....

I had bought some legacy/pyramid 4x6s for temporary use and experience the same results as you with nowhere near the "rated" power.

Yeah, if they are rated at 400 peak then you probably aren't giving them enough power. I think it would be better to buy new speakers than to buy an amp for them.

I know that there's probably a thousand posts out there asking this, but what's a decent 6.5 inch speaker for a reasonable cost? With no subs, do I want/need to get a 3-way speaker? Also, with my head unit, do I still want to look at getting an amp and/or equalizer?

your head unit isn't giving the speakers enough power...that is y it is clipping

get a good four channel amp to power them and they should sound better

400watts is peak, you will never get near that though. I'm guessing RMS is probably 60 or so

your head unit is probably only giving it around 10 watts rms

decent speakers brands are cdt, infinity, mb quarts

if you searched for 6.5 you will find many post and recommendations about speakers
