New Speaker Suggestion (Front/Rears)

Hello,

Have a '02 Camry, and found one speaker sounded really bad. Then I checked out the others and they all have several inch tears in the surround rubber.

Below is my configuration:

Kenwood XXV-01D, via Soundblaster E5 via Iphone

Front: Kappa Perfect 6.1 (just found out I'm using 693.9i's in the doors as car takes 6x9's)

Rear: Kappa 693.9i (2 ohm)

F/R Amp: PPI PCX4125 (125Wx4 @ ohms, 250Wx4 @ 2 ohms) (malfunctioning)

Subs: Infinity Perfect 12's

Sub Amps: Harrison Labs (800Wx2)

Stinger 10F, and Stinger 1F caps

Stinger 1500D battery.

Big 3, 160A alt.

Wide variety of music

Any reason the surround rubbers all tore? Is it probably because of clipping? Also, replacing the Perfect 6.1 with a 693.9i was not a good idea as I have no idea what the total impedence would be.

Looking for less sibilant sound and better mid-bass. Doors and Trunk, I would say are heavily Dynamatted, Dynaplated, and Dynafoam'd.

I know most will say to forget the rears, but I want to have some rear full range/fill for the rear passengers, and hopefully will help with the mid-bass.

Any suggestions up front to replace so it works with the Perfect component system?

Rear suggestions? I will be getting new HU, and equiv. full-range amp soon.

Thanks for any help

You're best off removing all Infinity hardware up front and starting fresh.

I developed a few speaker upgrade options for Toyotas for my previous employer. We should work something out.

Well, I just bought the Morel Ultra Tempo 692 2way component set for my car as recommended on several forums. 1st of all the woofer is a little deep and interfering with my window. Only 2.5mm. deeper than my last woofer. And didn't even bother to check clearance, and has now misaligned my window but I'll deal with that later.

Upon testing, medium volume (about 2-hr use), the sound was less sibilant and harsh, than the 693.9i(w/torn rubber surround 2ohms)/ Perfect 6.1. Both were at fairly equal volume. The Morel had a looser sound, but low and mid-range vocals were more apparent and easier to hear clearly. On the bad side, the mid bass is quite noticably weaker and empty sounding. I had the Morel's on the Left and the Infinity's on the Right. I'm assuming the bass signal was similar on both sides. I changed the cut-off freq to 80Hz on my headunit (usually have it on 120Hz).

I've played these Morel's about 2 hours worth. Do they need more break-in? Or is this all I can expect?.

PPI PC4400 (4x50W 4 ohms, 4x100W 2ohms)

More break-in for sure and more power if you want mids to shine. Morel's are usually very power hungry.
Thx. I'll keep at it. I'm using a bunch of washers as spacers to get enough space between speaker and window. The gap formed around can be filled with what? Anyone have some recommendations? At the store looking around. Some weatherstripping, caulking, or??

Thx!

I guess the Morel is too much of a pain to modify, and it may not even work out in the end, after bending a part of my window assmebly. And wasn't too pleased seeing the paper composition of the woofers knowing that water does get into the doors. So, may put the Morel woofers on the rear deck and get the Focal IC 690TOY for the front working with the Morel Ultra Component set.

Or I return the Morel Ultra's and buy a higher end shallow-mount Morel Comp 3-way Virtus 603/602 (didn't know my car had a bad spot for a mid in the dash) but giving up the 6x9 format for a 6-3/4" and compromise the mid-bass potential? Any thoughts?

I used aluminum electrical chassis spacers to put my Alpine SPR-50's up about 1/4 inch on the dash of my 2006 Grand Caravan when it was bottoming out:

I wish I could pull the windshield and get in there and build some real speaker enclosures!! If I could do that I'd but 6x9s up there!! There IS room, but I'd have to fabricate some pretty fancy cabinetry up there, somehow!! Very poor speaker mounts the way it is stock. :-( Just hanging a speaker my two opposing mounting holes? Ugh!! But it's what Chrysler did!! :-(

Cool! Thanks for the post. That is a nice spacer you found. Where'd you find it? I had to bunch 6-8 washers to get enough space was kinda a pain. But I think I might have already given up on this idea because mine is a little different that it is the rear plate of the speaker is interfering with the front door window when I roll it down. In fact it has already bent the window holder frame, so now I got to fix that hopefully not ruining too much of the sound insulation. So, then I would have to trim the door panel molding so it doesn't bulge out and hope that the speaker won't interfere with the speaker baffle. So, in the end it may not even work out.

Thinking of replacing the Morel woofer with a shallow mount one. I'm not sure how well that'd work with the component system.
