New SoundQubed 6.5" buzzing...

Speakers arrived yesterday, installed today, and one of them has a "buzz". On a 100Hz tone to set polarity with the sub there is a distinct buzz. I took that speaker out of the door to look for mechanical or vibration installation problems, and the buzz persists with the speaker unmounted, in free air. The oscilloscope shows a clean sine wave across the speaker terminals, and the signal is only a few volts (less than 1 watt). Yet the buzz persists.

Emailed SoundQubed.

Gently pushing on the cone I don't hear any scratching, and the dustcap looks glued alright.

test it on a home receiver or something else to see if its the speaker or if it might be something in your wire connections in your vehicle.

How do I find the spot? (Video uploading)

Use a little pick or knife point and poke around the spider landing to see if the spider is firmly fixed. Use your finger to gently push around the triple joint (where cone, coil, and spider meet) and see if there's not something loose there. The old AQ subs had a dustcap under the dustcap so if the dustcap you can see (or if there's one under it) were loose that would make that sort of noise as well. Pushing on the dustcap while it's playing should make the buzz lessen or go away if it's a loose dustcap.

Thanks for the troubleshooting pointers! I'm not going to mess with it any further since it's brand new and I do not want to risk voiding warranty. Say I think I find the problem and glue it up. If it fails again ... Then I might really be stuck with a lemon.

I went ahead and tapped around with a pencil eraser and looked at all the visible seams with a flashlight and magnifying glass. I couldn't hear or see any trouble areas around the dust cap, where the spider and cone meet, or tensil leads.

Time for a return then. If it were just a case of poor glue job somewhere a DIY fix would have been as good as what should have been done initially at the factory.
