I have been running 2 AB VFL's comps 15" on a memphis 4kw, I've been trying to hit a 150 out my trunk, with out a sealed off trunk wall, sub facing the back, in a box, traditional set up. My personal best is 145.9, everyone says 150 is impossible, that's why I'm stuck on trying to do it. I just purchased the new AB VFL comps, and bob insures me they're better than the old comp's, which I'll be the judge of that once I get these new ones installed. Has anyone dealt with the new vfl comps. I also stepped my amp game up, I bought the VFL1100.1, I do believe this will get me there. I have the reciepe for a 150+, from rob (thorshammer), he uses the same car as I do, and he clears 150, with 10", but I want to do it with a traditional setup. Basically, who has knowledge of the old vfl comp woofers, not the extremes, the big 85G motors, and has seen the new ones in action, and do you think or know they'll do better. I do know of some improvments with out even playing them, 4" voice coil former, and I always like direct leads better that push terminals, at least I can now use true 8 gauge wire, and the motor looks to be a better design, and some vast improvements on the soft parts, the woven nylon cone should make for better mechanical mass. I have to do some research on the new motor still, but if some of you guys have some technical details on the new one, as opposed to the old comp, I'd appreciate all real input I can get. I'm going to post pics of the old ones so you know exactly what VFL's I'm talking about, there were a few of them. thank you for reading

Well I usually compete at the local event my buddy Steve Mick puts on in the Ohio aera, Pittsburgh, Youngstown, etc. erea. And when did rob start using 15"s, he's always used thos DC 10"s. I just talked to him a little over a month ago. Anyway, I agree with the whole 12"s thing, but I've always gottem my best scores with 15"s, well my AB VFL's (old schools) When I say they say it's almost impossible, remember, I use a traditional setup, basically just a box in the trunk, facing the back. I could have been hit the 150 club with other applications. The thing that worries me the most is, I almost doubled the strenghth of my equipment and went up from a 144.2 with 2 10"s AB xfl's on a kicker zx2500.1, and went to my 2 vfl on a memphis 4kw, which I'm not even sure I doubled my power considering I was bursting that kicker at .7 ohms, that was doing about 33-3400 watts. I was thinking maybe I should run more than just 1 0 gauge wire front to back, maybe 4 strands, and use about 8 strands connecting my batteries, I'm only running 2 xs power d3100's, IDK how many more I'm gonna need for this 1100.1, but I know 2 is not cutting it. I've been doing installs at my shop for over 12 years, but I've only been competeing for 1 year, I've done a few shows, but I don't have a meter so it's alway's trial and error in the lanes, I dont know what I'm hitting until I'm there. I need to invest in a term lab meter, anyone selling one.

also, I wanna sound deaden my car more, but without a termpro meter, IDK if its hurting or helping in certain areas, I do know in my car particular not to do the roof, rob told me the 04 grand prix's do better with a flexing roof. I was seriously thinking about 12"s before I went ahead and got the new vfl's, I seen them and wanted to propose to them, and leave my wife. I was going after vibe bubonics, but metra always bull shits on them, then I was considering db drive wxd's. But I do think I will definatly get more air moving forward with 12"s instead of a dual 15" box clogging the trunk. I had a setup with 2 12" hcca's in the trunk but could clearly see I wasn't loud at all with them, you need crazy power to get them pushing spl, now that I have the 1100.1 I could probably do better at spl hz, but the 4kw wasn't enough for 2 of them at all, the sql was lovely with them, but once I got up over 46hz, they just had no impact behind them, you need way too much power to get a sub with a 4" excursion to put up numbers, my buddy clayton does stupid number with hcca's, at 46hz, but he has 6 12"s in a wall. Once I hit the wall class that'll be a totally different discussion, but I have to do this 150 with a traditional setup, my heart is set on it.

also, my car peaks at 50hz, and I had one setup that I don't remember what exectly I was pushing but I peaked at 48hz, so I always burst 48-50hz sweep on my burst, well not exactly a sweep, each track on the bass mechanics plays for 5 sec. I believe or it 3, but if I had a termpro, I could know exactly where I peak at with whatever application I'm running

Wow rambling man anyway try 2-12's subs forward port side all the way in the back of the trunk it will sound real quiet sealed but start opening doors and windows it will be a beast.

Like said above seal off the trunk.and face woofers forward. Also can I get cliffs on your 3 posts? Rob switched to 15s within the last couple months. He's doing over 50 between 30-50hz //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif with the same amp iirc

Those subs look like....no they are the same as....well...never mind.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/sneaky.gif.7189749b3a3f769e8815b47e8ae87f88.gif

good luck with your goals. There are many ways in which to accomplish what you are trying to do. Most of it is just build...test...rebuild...test...repeat several times.

Good luck running that amp on 2 batteries.....good luck running it at all really. Those big amps aren't terribly reliable for daily driving.

I can't immagine tuning to peak at 50hz with 10KW on tap you can't get it done. I have found that just the direction you fire woofers and ports and box position can make up to 3-5 db difference.... You'll need to create a lot of sawdust and do some testing to figure it out.

I have an extra Makeitlouder.com pressure sensor I'd sell you for 90$. You will need a good DMM with peak hold and a clean mV reading.... It is as sensitive as your DMM so you can test to see gains and losses. Used termlab will run you around 450$ and IMO the SPL-Labs Wireless meter is a supperior product if you were going for a big money meter.

I guess I'm the ramblin man, anyway, I never said I was going to run this amp on just 2 xs power 3100's, n I'm **** sure not running it as a daily driver, that would sound like ****, there would be all of 10 songs I can play once I tune everything to peak at 48-50hz, I'm fully aware of the electrical side of running an amp. I will probably run 4 xs power 3100, on a 370A alt, that will be plenty for bursting numbers in the lanes. I was more looking to see who had experience with the new vfl's and Ideas on getting this score with a traditional setup, that's the goal. I could easily build an app with front facing woofers and clear 150, I would have done it a long time ago. The last show I did I bursted 145.9 at 49hz, with a slot port box, I just can't face these woofers forward until I achieve this 150 with them facing the back, that's what I have everyone telling me I can't do with my application. My daily driver system is 2 12" cerwin vega stroker pro's, on a memphis 4kw, and they sound great, excellent sql. and as for the guy that called me the ramblin man, I understood what you said, and it's exactly what 90% of my competeing buddys tell me to do. I'm giving this one more shot this weekend at claytons shop, there's a single pointer show, I've been working on electrical upgrades all day, and probably all week, if I can get enough time inbetween installs for customers, remote starter season is a *****

yea, I feel that, I think trunk cars should have a class of their own, if your woofers are in the trunk, in a box, facing the rear, they should have like super street NW, and no trunk walls, DB drag said they're making a lot of changes for next season, i hope to see something like that, but I doubt it. They really need to change the whole box above the window pane in suv's getting thrown in SS Extreme 1-2, boxes against walls just isn't fair
