new comp, old ipod

So I got a new ipod like a year ago and I was using my windows 2000 computer, but the new ipod needed XP, so I took a lot of time and transferred them to my laptop with XP. Anyways, the laptop crashed and the hard drive is toast. I got a new hard drive for the laptop but all the songs have been wiped off. If I plug in my ipod will it just put all the songs on my ipod onto the laptop? Or will it erase all my songs on the ipod? If that doesn't work, what is the easiest way to put like 1500 songs from one computer onto another? The original way I did it was a pain and there is no way I'm doing it again.
