So I got my custom box installed finally (Built by spkrman...4.5 cubes @ 45hz..) It sounds real good, and gets ****ing LOUD. Heres a few questions. I was driving around town tonight bumping some rap..and i hear popping coming from the sub. I'm like oh shit i blew the ****er..so i turn it down all the way and it still makes the popping sound like its trying to hit. I check everything it is okay and then all of a sudden it starts working again. So i'm showing my friends the thing hitting and im playing a 45hz sweep from bass mechanic and like 20sec into the track it cuts off, and does the popping thing. I turn everything down, gain/bass boost then listen to some more music (dont funk wit my heart) and its hittin, soundin good. My questions are these.

WHY DID IT DO THAT!

Setting gain/bass boost..Should I turn the bass boost all the way up when im setting it, or turn it down so that i can turn the gain louder.

BTW..box rules...

bass boost all the way off, set your gain with the volume 3/4's... Your gain shouldn't be much past half if any for daily... MAKE SURE YOUR SUBSONIC FILTER IS SET RIGHT!!! it sounds like you are either clipping the sh#t out of your sub or you are trying to play notes wayyyyyyy below your tuning (which is possible with the tuning of your box)

3/4 isnt the magic number for all people, on all decks. Set the gain using the highest volume level you use on a daily basis. Also, set your gains according to the gain tutorial on this forum.

dude, classic case of clipping.

your bassboost should NEVER EVER be 'turned all the way up' - unless you are trying to see what will break first; amp or sub.

bassboost is to be use SPARINGLY, or not at all - PERIOD. it introduces noise, and it sends square waves (aka clipped signals) to the sub, and does not let it cool properly, and raises the power exponentionally (harming the amplifier, and the speaker).

also, playing notes below ~35hz (in your box) is not a good idea, because it will case the speaker to bottom out - and even break.

set your gain according to THIS TUTORIAL! and stop using your gain\level\basboost\boost\whatever as volume - or your shit WILL break.
