I am building a new box and am not sure whats going in it for sure yeat but I am trying to find out what the method if for the port. I have heard you multiply 15 by the number of cubic feet to the the area. I also heard that the port length at 16 inches is 40 htz. So if I lengthen it it should get lower? How many inches for 1hertz? Someone help me out here please

First off, there is no magic number for port length, area, and the resulting tuning frequency. You need to go type in your specifications into a box calculator such as the one on the RE website, or bcae1.com... or if you know your terminology really well, WinISD Pro is really nice. Basically your port area is determined by box volume and how much air your subs will be pushing. It needs to be big enough so that there wont be any port noise. Second, your port length is determined by port area and how low or high you want the box tuned. Usually anywhere between 30-40hz is good for listening purposes. As far as your 1hz idea goes, that means 1 cycle of the sub per second. Anything below 20 hertz is pretty much useless, crappy sounding, or completely inaudible. So I'd shoot for somewhere in the ballpark of 35 hertz depending.
