I'm ashamed to even bring this up here, but hopefully someone can help me. I'm the district tech for a public school system. We have a remote branch, and adult education center, that is not part of our regular network. It is fed by Bellsouth DSL. The people in charge are tired of **** and such, so they purchased a Symantec 1600 series Gateway, and i can't for the life of me get it to work.
I'll try to describe the layout as best i can. Keep in mind, i'm having to work around all sorts of obstacles, so i'm using any means necessary to get it to work.
Phone line > DSL modem
DSL modem > wall jack
wall jack > patch panel
patch panel > ethernet 1 on the gateway - dhcp enabled
ethernet 0 on gateway > switch
all other jacks in the area are connected to this switch also
ethernet 0 must have a static IP, so i assigned it 192.168.1.10, ethernet 1 is getting its IP via DHCP from the ISP, also 192.168.1.x
the closest i've got to a success with the thing was: DHCP server enabled on ethernet 0, which allowed me from a laptop, attached directly to the switch in the wiring closet, to recieve an ip and hit the internet. but, once i connected the other ports from the patch panel to the switch, i get a "limited or no connectivity" error when i try to plug into a jack elsewhere in the building. then, if i go back to the wiring closet and attach directly to the switch again, i can't console into the gateway anymore
i'm about to pull my hair here. i'm sure its something stupid that i've got wrong, but i don't mess with this stuff enough to be able to figure it out.
