Need Suggestions For a Dorm Setup...Packaged Setup or Pieced Together?

I do not really want to bring my home system to the dorm because i think it is to bulky. So I was thinking more along the lines of a 2.1 channel system or something along the lines of that. I am trying to stay in the range of 250$ but i will go up to 300$.

I was thinking maybe something along the lines of this

or maybe

I do like my first suggestion because it is fairly compact but it just worries me that it will not be loud enough with only 30 watts going to each speaker.

I am also willing to piece one together if you guys have some better suggestions.

I would like it to be able to become loud when needed. As long as it has the optical receiver so i can hook up my ps3 to it then it is fine.

As for a sub i was just thinking of taking the one from my home and just hooking it up to the receiver.

ehh i do not really know where i am going with this so suggestions would be greatly appreciated

if you are looking for just 2 speakers and a sub, look at the klipsch promedia 2.1.....

amazing sound, plenty of bass, but it does not have a receiver. it is set up like computer speakers with a minijack.

x2 klipsch makes great stuff

also, what exactly are you looking for? A system for movies with the occasional music playing or a system for music playing with the occasional movies?

You could go with a nice PA system and still be able to watch movies through it. I have a 5.1 surround system and my PA system hooked up in my living room. When I wanna get that nice rumble from movies I use the PA system instead of the 5.1 because its nothing to special. My set up consists of two PA's, an amp, and a mixer which I spent a little over 400 I think but if you shop around you can find cheaper prices.

those are pretty nice but i do have the 5.1 logitech computer surround at my house and i could just bring that down there if i wanted but i am not really looking for computer speakers setup.

Well I guess i will lean toward the Music side because I regularly play music rather then watch movies. But like you said, i would like it to sound decent for movies when i am in the mood :\ I as well am going for the rumble //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Now, with your PA system, i really do not know where to start, what are some decent brands for the amp, mixer, etc.

Behringer is one of the better companies. They have quality equipment, I use the eurorack UB502 for my mixer, great little mixer and will run you less than a $100. Not cheap in quality at all. My amp is a fleco PA1 but they dont make them anymore so after you decide on which speakers you want I can help you find a nice amp in your price range. The speakers I am running are MTX TP112's but they dont make those either. However, the new model is the TP1200. The MTX's are great for a budget setup and dont take much to get them loud. rms is 150w each which allows you to spend less on an amp. There is also an option of getting powered PA's as well and run them into a mixer.

I like that mixer.

For speakers, i am thinking these will suffice

or

like i said i do have a powered sub at home that i will bring down to complete it.

As for an amp....idk yet

tough choice between the two....I would try the Pioneers though, with that 8" mid you should get better mid bass than the 5 1/4. As long as your not wanting really loud music these should work fine paired with your sub. Is the sub you speak of the logitec?

As for an amp you might be able to find a quality receiver to push these. I would give them at least 80rms though so if that cant be found I would go with an amp and mixer.

I am going to have to disagree with this statement. Behringer is mediocre at best. But at around $50 for the UB802, I guess you could just go buy another one when it breaks.
mediocre:rolleyes:

If behringer is mediocre why would dj's swear by it? as well as musicians? I never said it was top of the market equipment but its a lot better than mediocre equipment.

I don't know too many Professional musicians/DJ's that will swear by Behringer. I consider Behringer to be in the same league as Numark. Not as bad as American Audio or Stanton. But it is FAR from the quality of Pioneer/Allen&Heath/Rane.

edit: But this is only my Opinion and should be taken AS-IS

well I happen to know many musicians and djs that use and behringer as well as higher quality products and they would swear by behringer as well as state they are not mediocre equipment

ooo ok thx maybe i will look into some other ones then.

lol no i hate my logitech sub. ever since i got it its always sounded like ***, it makes some weird noises with bass. I also have one of the newer 7.1 onkyo systems sitting in my room and i was just going to take that out. i was thinking of getting a new sub and making a new box for it because i feel it is tuned kind of high for my liking.

I'm sure many people like Behringer. It is inexpensive and serves a purpose. If someone is looking for an inexpensive mixer/amp/speaker than Behringer is a perfectly good option.

Unfortunately this conversation we are having is adding nothing to the original poster's question. We can disagree all we want. Claim who knows the most DJ's. Claim who's installed/serviced the audio/lighting in the most clubs. So, at this point I realize I'm not going to affect your opinion. but I'm not going to waste anymore of anyone's time disagreeing with you.

you would be crazy surprised with the klipsch I recommended......it may not have the features, but it will shake the entire hall on bass notes, and for movies it is incredible. the highs are very crisp and the mids are impressive as well.

If you haven't heard one, you should check it out
