It's been ages for me, configuring my own machines and I have seen quite a few guys on here that seem to know good cost/performance combination's when setting up a custom rig, which is why I figured I would seek some advice here...

my nephew needs a higher performance PC for school, his primary uses for the machine will be graphic design, general web surfing, photo and some minor video editing (photoshop, corel painter x, adobe premier and some others), he will be running XP. It doesn't have to be a "top flight" machine, he won't be running any games at all, but a solid machine that can multitask for him is my goal...

everything outside of displays, I would say $1000 is the budget...

if anyone wouldn't mind pointing me into the right direction, I would appreciate it...

For a Cpu You can go dual or quad, the e8xxx series is a nice dual and the q6xxx series is a nice quadfor a mobo you can go intel or amd....I'd go intel personaly(from experiences)

gpu: try the 9800gtx series or the 8800 ultra or if you wanta be bad, grab the 2xx series

ram: i gota oz ram its 4gigs 2x, 2gigs

Psu: cosiair 750watt psu

Heatsink:Try the artic cooler 7

1k is really spendy you can probly spend 6-8 and be fine...

The q6600 or 6800 will tear shit up, its a bad *** cpu, If you Invest in a better heat sink or even go liquid cooled you can overclock them hard.
Sorta... gimme a second and Ill price you out a machine on newegg brb

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021

Bad *** case, I use it with my system. Keeps shit nice and cool.

Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284

1TB 32mb cache SATAII, I've personally used this drive and I think its amazing. It's extremely fast and quite if noise is an issue.

Video Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130448

You could probably go with a lower end video card but this card here is the best bang for your buck IMO.

Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

I've used this power supply in 5 builds I have done. Can't go wrong with single rail 12v Corsairs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166

Personally use this in my machine, OC's to DDR2 1200 with ease //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128356

Basic motherboard, I have used it in 5 builds I have done and never has let me down. Overclocks like a champ as well, lots of BIOS options.

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115055

Quad-Core power. Need I say more?

This machine here will do whatever your heart desires. It comes out to $876.92, but like I said earlier we can go with a 9*** series nvidia card for cheaper but still get great performance.

Other option for video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130339

Comes out to $776.92, decent video card still.

nice links...pretty **** solid machine for the money //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I agree with mostly everything. Have you used the gigabyte motherboards before? I have heard mixed reviews.

Why does he need a pc like that if hes just doing stuff like that??? Its a waste of money?? In a year all thoughs prices will drop 50%, he has no use for that gear he could easy cut that stuff back and save 400-500$
Every part in that computer is the "lower end" quality part accept for the video card. If hes going to be doing video editing and graphic design why throw a 100 dollar video card in there when for 44 more you can get a high end machine? Lmao...prices drop all the f-ing time dude there is new shit every other month. He said his budget is 1000, im almost 300 shy. Why would you want to go with some lower end machine when in a year you'll just have to upgrade again? This Rig will last quite a while.

The gigabyte mobo is an awsome budget mobo. Like I said before I have used this mobo in 5 different builds with all different hardware and have had no issues what so ever. I've used the E2200 E5400 E6600 Q6600 and the Q8300 and has had no hikcups or issues at all. It's a solid board. 2 gigs to 4 gigs at DDR2 800-1100 have worked flawlessly.

It depends for its use's but its a good machine, I'd get some better cooling and a new case though
That case keeps my OC'ed GTX260 216 stock air cooling @ 770/1550/1200 below 53 celsious during Furmark and Crysis Warhead DX10 enthusiast 1080p for a couple hours. Has plenty of good ariflow and is a mid tower so its not like it takes up a whole lot of space. And my E6600 @ 3.8ghz below 47 during Orthos (100% load on both cores)

I had that case before my 1200, Its kinda tite if you wanta throw in extra gear, Only think sucks with the 260, you need to use rivia tuner and set the fans, I ran like 60C in cod 5 with riviatuner set to fan 90% with games its like 53 load, (In summer room temps) I had liquid On the my Q66 and was load in the 40s...
Rivatuner is a thing of the past. It's all about the eVGA Precision now.

Parts have really come down since I last built. I thought I got a good deal last march on a q6600 for 180.
