Need some suggestions for building a custom PC...

You gotta remember though that alot of these newegg noobs have never built a pc before and could have installed the mobo incorrectly onto the mobo risers causing grounding issues which could damage the board. All mobo manufactures out there have DOA boards though, just luck I guess if you get a good one of not. I got all my shit from craigslist and tested it with prime 95, 3dmark06 and memtest before I bought it and it did fine.... I came up on a great deal... got a XFX780i mobo, Corsair 850 watt powersupply, 9700 zalman heatsink, E8500 CPU, 4GB of 1066mhz hyperx, a Lanli case all for $300 total, he even had all the original boxes, you see deals like that all the tine,
true, true...I'm going to keep looking around, I have some time still before we need to order the stuff, he doesn't even start school until May I believe...

it takes some shit to "destroy crisis"... and dont tell me it doesnt
Trust me I know what it takes //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif but these days you can literally get a fairly cheap system that will play cryis at least high if not very high. If my GTX260 can do very high 1080p 16QxAA and still get 27-34 fps at that resolution..

thats dookie. i got like 18k on my core 216

What CPU do you have?

I sorta downgraded myself from a E6600 B2 to a E5200 M0, the E5200 clocks higher than my E66 did by 400mhz. And still it made no difference in my 3dmark score what so ever with default clocks on my 260 or from 752/1550/1300

trust you..uhh no. i get like 30 maxed out.and yes crysis is very playable at 30ish frames, some games are just liek that.

others..like cod4 is complete shit at around 30.i get like 140.if i drop past 80 i can see it.and dont tell me" OOMMHHO ZOMG U CANT SEE PAST 60?!!! FRAMEZZZZ!)

cause i can notice my shit drop from 130 to 70 or 80..

and to "destroy crysis" is not anywhere near 30 fps. more like 60+

Im not using a GTX260 as the example... im talkin either a 295 or a 4870x2 with budget hardware. its easily doable.

Meh I always have vsync on so it doesnt bother me. Only games i've found that drops below the 40's is dx10 assassins creed in certain areas and dx10 lost planet and of course dx10 crysis.

On top of that not many people play at those resolutions either. Thats what I was getting at in my post above. Most people play at standard resolution 1440x900 or sometimes 1680x1050.

u have a core 216 or 192 shit. and i got a q6600 to like 3.4,witch is totally enough..anything past that is stupid. it doesnt do much after that.people just want to sound cool and say there cpu has some high numbers.lol

my buddie has a 4870x2 and gets like 40ish maxed .which is very decent.far from destroying still. im not tryin to come off as a dick or nuthin,im just tryin to say it takes a heafty machine to run that game and tear it up. its poorly coded.lol

I've got the 216 55nm.

I cant stand using a LCD because of the input lag you get. Even a 2ms is crap IMO.

Input_lag_animated.gif

I use old school $1800 sony trinitron 21" CRT's that have a 170hz refresh rate.

They are Sony GDM-F500R FD Trinitron's. The 22mm dot pitch is freaking

amazing.... These monitors were for ballers only back in the day. I was just

watching the discovery channel and they had on "Super Cars" the guy who

designed the Ford GT super car uses the same monitor as me, I tivo'd it lol.

You can find these in great conidtion for $50-$100 it's the way to go if you

game. I can play anyone in a 1v1 using a M40 bolt and if we both have same

ping I will dominate with faster reflexes due to seeing you before you see me....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input_lag

Pretty much using a LCD is like adding 15-60ms onto your ping.

Add me to your xfire and I'll show you what I'm talking about, you will prob call me out for hackin lol...

550fps average, doesnt drop below 175fps so I see all of my 170hz refresh rate,

it's very noticable when playing at this refresh rate, I was just at a LAN event

and everyone wanted to sell there LCD's and get my monitor. Also running at

this 16:9 rez gives u a hella good fov in conjunction with cg_fov80. Yes you can adjust your monitor to do widescreen.

so this is what I have put together, let me know what you think...

MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813141005

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130370

HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319

OPTI DRIVE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151173

POWER SUPPLY: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227289

all together about $850 minus a case as I'm still undecided on one, going to keep looking around...but that's what I have so far, probably going to order the MOBO/CPU/GPU on Tuesday...it's probably a touch more than he needs in some areas, in other areas I feel that we might be able to go bigger, but overall for what he will be doing I think this should be more than adequate and should last him a few years...

For his needs, I'd say it's excellent. I'd invest in another hard drive for insurance purposes. If he's going into projects and stuff, you want to make sure it can be saved. Unless he has a nice sized external(s).
