Need some sort of spacer for head unit

I have an old car that I put a head unit in, but there isn't quite enough room behind the dash. The unit sticks out about a half inch. I don't have a problem with that, except that it looks bad. Does anyone know if there might be a spacer available for such a situation? It thought about making something, but I can't think of anything that would work, except maybe I could cut a piece of 1/2" plywood to fit and paint it. I'd rather find some sort of 1/2" plastic I could use, but I can't imagine where I could get something like that. Has anyone run into this situation?

It's a 65 Chevelle with a custom dash panel. I had to cut the square hole for the head unit, only to discover that it hits things behind the dash before it quite goes all the way in. There just isn't quite the depth needed.
