Need some help on head unit installation

Hello.

This is my first thread and first car audio installation. I have a 2003 chevolet cavalier. Unfortunately when I bought the car the stock wire harness was already cut. After doing a couple hours of research online I finally came up with the wiring diagram for the stock harness. After hooking up the wires my head unit will only now power on when I hit a certain button. After about 10 seconds or so it just shuts off. I can turn it back on again but once again after 10 seconds it just shuts off. I can put a cd into it and it powers on but after 10 seconds it just powers off. Any suggestions would be greatful. Thanks

It's a JVC head unit by the way.

thats weird. Sounds like your power wire is not giving a constantly on voltage.

Take a dmm and test your voltage, and make sure it stays on for more than 10 seconds. use the dmm to find your constant power wire, your switched power wire and your ground, also your remote wire.

Would the remote wires and the constant wires have something to do with it? I left those wires disconnected because they didn't match up with the wire diagram I was using. I couldn't find anymore info than what I already found on the wires.

remote wire is wire off your head unit that you will use to connect your power antenna (if you have one) or for an amplifier. You need to have your constant and switched power both connected. I personally connect both of them together. In that case, you need to make sure to manually turn off your head unit when you turn the car off, where as when constant and switched are hooked up,, head unit turns off when car is turned off.

If you DONT have constant hooked up, most likely, every time you turn your car off,, you will loose all of your settings.

I also just read on the instruction manual that the ground should be fastened to a metallic or the car chassis. I have it connected to the ground off of the old stock wire. Would this be a problem? So basically I should connect the wire to the constant?

the link for the jvc manual will not open.. if you are still having trouble,, send it again or let me know and ill look for it.

Do you have a digital multi meter (dmm)? If so,, that will quickly help you indetify the troubles. If you dont have one,, surely a friend or neighbor will.. this should be an easy solution unless the head unit is damaged. Is it new?
