When checking electrical you should check all the power points using the same grounding point (battery ground) to get a reference. Then check using that powered parts ground. If something is different-bad ground. you didn't say how you tested the amp outside of the car as far as powering it and grounding it. Or did you leave it in and just hook up the ipod? different parameters=different results. when you tested the the ipod did you use the remote wire from the hu to turn it on or did you jump it? if you used it then the remote is probably fine. 12.28v is on the low end also. I have 14.8. Amps have input voltage they like and after a while of running on low voltage will blow from pulling to hard to get the same amount of power. Another thing you could do is grab a speaker wire to rca converter from a local shop. Something you would use if your head unit didn't have an rca out. connect your speaker leads from head unit to the converter and run the same rca. this will rule out the amp.

I left the amp in the car when I plugged in the iPod. I just pulled the rca out and plugged in the 3.5 to rca for my iPod. I also tried the line reducer (left over from my initial install) and got the same faint sound. I would go back to my initial set up (with the stock stereo) if I weren't in so deep in money buying the faceplate and hu.

What is the amp gain set to?

Set at 3....or 1/4. I've dropped all the way down and all the way up on the gain. No difference.

Update on an earlier post......I'm running type "S" subs, dvc. I just did a dmm test with the car idle and got a 14.34 reading.

14.34 is much better. i can't remember if you used the same rca to power the alpine?

I did. I've tried (I think) every possible troubleshoot with no positive results. The only thing I haven't tried is grounding the hu straight to the battery. I just picked up a Pioneer 3602-2ch for $70.00 to see if it's more compatible with the hu. Quick update.....I put the GMA 3602 in and the speakers came alive!!! I want to thank everyone who shared their thoughts and input. My conclusion, at least in my car, is Pioneer hu and Fosgate amps just aren't compatible......in this case. I hate to part ways with that amp, but I'll take solid sound over major headaches anyday haha PEACE
