Need serious help for head unit/speakers combo - Honda Civic 03

So, I bought a JVC head unit, and 4 alpine speakers from best buy about 2 weeks ago. The speakers sounded absolutely terrible, crackled like they were already blown, and had absolutely no bass. So, today I went out and bought 4 pioneer speakers. they're 3 way, 6 1/2, TS-A1676R. These speakers are a hell of a lot clearer, but once again, the bass is almost non-existent. I don't want a sub to the point where it's shaking the entire car, but I want the bass to be good enough to where you feel it in the front and back seats. My buddy that puts the unit and speakers in for me said he thinks it may be the head unit at this point, because our other friend who bought the same speakers, well you can feel the kick from anywhere in the car.

It's just highly annoying at this point, because my car before this, (04 cavalier), I only had a Pioneer head unit in it with factory speakers and it sounded 10x better then what I've been throwing at my Honda. Please let me know what your suggestions are. I can still return all 4 speakers and the head unit for something completely different, so it doesn't matter, as long as it has a nice kick all around the car with clear sound.

Thank you!

What model JVC?

What type of Honda?

Starting with some of the possibles...Cav factory speakers require very little power to push them...compare speakers especially the magnet...and can get more sound across a wider range than after market speakers because they generally require more power to get the same amount of sound at a wider range and it is possible the JVC head unit just doesn't put out enough power to push the Pioneer speakers enough for a more powerful sound across the lower range.

I'm not a big fan of three ways. I prefer a good pair of components or coaxials as in my experience they have a better sound but that is brand/model dependent...

Double check your connections and the head unit's settings to make sure they are all correct and where they should be...check speaker connections to make sure the speakers are in phase...positive to positive/negative to negative for both speakers from the head unit. It is an easy mistake to make that will have a big effect on how the system sounds.

Good luck and keep us informed.

What model JVC?

What type of Honda?

It's a Honda Civic LX 4-door

And the JVC is the KDX330BTS.

After doing some research, the pioneer speakers I bought have 320W per speaker, while the JVC HU only puts out 50Wx4.. I don't know exactly what that means, but I'm assuming the head unit is way too weak for what the speakers are capable of.

I would like to get a HU that can make these speakers really pop. I'm going to Best Buy to return the HU either tomorrow or tonight, so if you could respond quick, that would seriously be awesome. I figured a Pioneer HU will be the best option.

Well to start out the speakers have a "max" power handling of 320 watts...that means they "probably" won't fry until a lot of power is pumped through them...Actually the more useful number is the RMS power which is 5 to 50 watts of "continuous" power the speaker can safely handle.

The JVC deck is a very basic deck boasting 22 watts of RMS continuous power.

So you have a "very" basic system capable of playing music at modest volumes and really require a low power requirement speaker...which is more than likely why the Cav system sounds better...very very efficient full range speakers that don't need much power to push them. The Pioneer deck was able to make much better use of the factory speakers because they require very little power and were able to do more with the power from the Pioneer.

The deck and speakers are very low cost items and are marginally better than the average factory system.

You need to think about what you want for sound and what budget you have to work with.

You can do better than JVC which pops up as a WalMart special when doing a Google search...very inexpensive and low quality.

Speakers should be coaxials and again quality equates to cost up to a certain degree depending on the whole system. The Pioneer speakers are also inexpensive speakers and you can do better for the cost.

If these parts are the most you can afford you can do a bit better but you aren't going to get a thumper system in any way. You are getting a very basic system similar to an inexpensive factory system in a base model car.

I did a bit of looking around at Crutchfield and you can do better for the same amount of money or a bit more or less for a better head unit and speakers.

HU power doesn't provide enough amperage vs. an aftermarket small 4 ch amp (such as 50x4). Nothing too big or extravagant, but something better/safer/less distorted than HU power.

Why not add a small 8" sub if your wanting a little bass? Now you could get a 5 ch amp too to power everything and all that could cost less than 400-500 bucks. Just up to you.

I would try swapping out the HU....what happened to the settings on the HU to get that sound you want?

So, I returned everything and got myself 4 41KSC654 6 1/2" coaxial Kickers, and the Sony MEXXB100BT Headunit. Went from $200 total to $400 total, and of course the headunit won't turn on, so going back to Best Buy tomorrow to exchange it. Otherwise, I'm hoping this gives me the sound I'm looking for. Any ideas on this before I have it all situated tomorrow?

Already too invested at this point, just want to get it over with. With that being said, is that combo any better then what I had before?
just have them give you a working one instead of jumping from head unit to head unit. Its a good unit most of the times, you just got unlucky with a lemon however i doubt that. I'm pretty sure the best buy technicians horrifically F*cked up your install. Best buy car audio horror stories are a thing. Just letting you know.

poor op, hope it gets resolved... kicker coax's are not what you want though....

get a component set of the polk dxi's and a cheap $100 4 channel amp if you want real clear mids and highs

ive got the dxi's in my kicks, so far i like them. not as loud as other speakers, i assume a lower sensitivity or the fact that theyre down in my kick and not my door, but i like them. crossed at 80 or something with a 48db slope on my dsp

Got the db type ones, with silkdome tweeters. Their kinda expensive, never had the brand thought I'd try them out/taking a chance

Meh, I thought they had separate lines of speakers but that's ok. Just one of them has 147 reviews, almost all 5 stars...so can't be that bad.

Can't wait for them...need some better sound than the stock crap.
