need new deck w/ new speakers?

Hi, I'm new to the whole car audio thing. I'm going to replace my speakers in my 1987 Chevy Blazer, and my question is : do I need to buy a new cd deck with the new speakers to replace the factory deck in the blazer? I don't really need a cd player in the car, I just hook up my minidisc to the tape deck, but is there going to be more power to the speakers with an after market deck as opposed to the factory tape deck? Will there be more watts per channel, better sound quality etc...? Also, if I need to buy a new deck, how many watts per channel will I need? The front speakers will be 160watt, and the back will be 400watt. I'm a complete newbie and only know what I've learned from research in the past few days : ). Please let me know anything else relevent... how hard will it be to install myself? anything else...

The factory deck will put out anywhere from 10-20 watts RMS, although 20 is being very genrous...I would guess it's somewhere in the 15 watt range. An aftermarket HU will get you anywhere from 20-25 watts RMS....most aftermarket HU's give 22 watts RMS. If you get new interior speakers, keeping the factory deck kind of defeats the purpose of getting those speakers......and just for the record, the 160 and 400 watts you listed are the Max ratings, the RMS of those speakers is significantly less, and RMS is the only figure that matters.....

As far as installation....it's very easy.

Thanks gauntlet, just the answers I was looking for. Guess I'll start to look for a deck as well. Another question I have is (from another forum) :

So, if I buy a new cd deck... do I need to buy one that has 4 channels becuase I'm going to have 4 speakers replaced in my suv? Also, how much more clarity are we talking about here with upgrading?

Also : ), lol, all I listen to and will listen to in my car w/ the new speakers is Trance, House, etc... will there be enough bass with these new speakers? I don't want too much bass and won't be blasting hip hop to be heard 3 blocks down, but I definately want enough tight bass to be there... will this be enough or would you reccomend a sub?

Well....all the HU's will either have a 4 channel MOSFET internal amp, or no amp at all. It will definitely sound better than your factory deck.

I can't tell you if you'll be pleased with the setup, replace the speakers, get your HU, and see how it sounds. If you want more, you can always add a 10 or 12" sub later..

I will be betting that you will want a single 10 or single 12. I doubt the new speakers will satisfy your needs for a lil punchy bass that the music you listed has. But do what Guantlet said and install the new speakers and see if your happy with the bass output. Then come back to us if you need a sub or two.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif We can design you a good system on a budget.
