3/4 is plenty and the wood fisher uses trupan is better than MDF and lighter.

i dont think 3/4 is enough.. i have 1-1/2" mounting depth. the new comps are 3"

is it possible to cut a circle with a jigsaw. i don't have a router. would this require sanding

as long as you take your time its pretty good circle. its not going to be showing so no it dont need sanding. just take your time with it, its very easy.
