Need input on amp

Hi! I am new here, and find the forum really cool. Recently, I got a deal on 2 Audiobahn subs, namely AW1000X (2001 model). They are rated at 600W RMS each, and are DVC 4ohms. Now, I've been lookin for an amp...

I have checked Audiobahn amps, and have found the A12001DT. What do you think about this one? I will gladly consider other brands if you suggest me some.

On a side note, I plan to run the subs all in parallel, to produce a 1ohm load. Given that I want to feed each sub enough power, am I right assuming I need 1200Wx1 RMS to run both subs, or will a 600Wx1 RMS will give both subs 600W (hence the 1ohm load?). I am a little confused about this right now, so I'd appreciate a lil' clearing up.

P.S.: I got a stock 80A alternator. Will it handle that? I am still running a Pioneer 50Wx4 head unit, wired to Pioneer speakers, but no amp on speakers yet.

Thank you!

David

You just started a fire, here come the Audiobahn haters! The mono amp you picked is a good choice, I've heard that amp in action, and it definately puts out the juice.

Thank you for your reply. About Audiobahn haters, well, I take the advice, however, I like to try things myself. I will give them a shot, and at that price, I simply could not pass them up. Here in Canada, we get horrible prices on audio equipment, so when I saw that I immediately sold my crappy old Sherwood 180W 2ch amp... (you get the picture!). Even if many people think Audiobahn sucks or whatever, it will still be a HUGE improvement to me...

Thanx for pointing out to me that the amp I mentioned handles the job quite well. Now, my concern is: will a 1200Wx1 RMS amp be enough for both subs?

Thanx!

David

if it is 1200X1 how you gonna run 2 subs? running both to one channel? im new at somethings.... i know the basics... thanks for replys
Well.. if it's a mono amp there's only one channel you can run the subs on. There's usually 2 speaker outs on a class D mono amp, however. Both speakers will just be recieving the same signal.

Hi again and thanks for replies. About the amp, I found some of them on eBay, around $320~$400. Still undecided between the A1300HCT and the A12001DT...

Both subs are DVC 4ohms, so running them all in parallel would give a 1ohm load, hence the need for a 1ohm stable amp. Since both subs are rated at 600W RMS, I assumed that a 1200W RMS amp would do the job. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I should be receiving my subs soon, still haven't ordered the amp yet. Will keep you posted about installation. Could take a while though, as I need to pile up some dough... hehe.

Thanx!

David

This is important. Are your speakers Dual 4 ohm coils or dual 2 ohm coils? If they are 4 ohm coils I would wire the subs in series parallel. That way you can get a 4 ohm bridged amp to run them. The reason I would go with a 4 ohm bridged amp is the distortion. Every time you cut the impedance, you raise the THD(total harmonic distortion). If you run the speaker in series parallel, it will give you a four ohm load( if they are 4 ohm coils. If they are 2 ohm coils I would also wire them in series parallel and get the Eclipse 32430 1100 watt dual mono amp. Its 550 watts x 2 with kick but signal to noise ratio good distortion level and great damping factor; I used to own one and it put out a ridiculous amount of power(more than rated) plenty of power for the audiobahns, plus you can get them on ebay for around 200.00-400.00 dollars, they retail at 1000.00 dollars. Thats what I would push them with. If you have questions, ask away. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rotflol.gif.b453361716769b8110ddefc85ff03cd2.gif

Thanx to all who have replied! I have narrowed down my choices to about 4 amps right now... I wanna know what you think.

- Audiobahn A12001DT

- Audiobahn A1300HCT

- HiFonics Brutus BX1500D

- Orion 1200D

I believe these amps to all be 1ohm stable, and to provide me with all the power I need. Remember: both subs are Audiobahn AW1000X, rated at 600W RMS each, DVC 4ohms. I intend on wiring them all in parallel (thus 1ohm load).

Which amp would you choose? Can you suggest others? I know I will probably need to get my alternator rewound, I'll keep the volume down until this gets done. (stock 80A alt on 2002 Hyundai Accent GSi).

Thanx for replies!

P.S.: do you recommend a ported/tuned enclosure or a sealed one? I intend on custom building it to fit my trunk nicely, with carpetry and all.

David

Right now, I'm leaning more and more towards the Orion 1200d. I've never heard of PPI amps before... Are they the Precision Power brand? I saw one on eBay, and the S/N ratio was 115dB, rather high to me (the higher the S/N ratio, the better, isn't it?)

I will further continue my searches and keep you all posted of my finds.

Thanx!

David
