for my 350z which is configured as follows:
Amp: JL Audio 500 5/5 (100w x 2 front, 25w X 2 rear, 250 sub)
JL Audio subs (i think they are 10in, may be 12, x2)
front speakers: blown Boston acoustic 6.5 plus tweeter components, don't know why they blew
rear: stock, but I have a cheap pair of Alpine 6.5 s-types to go in there, if I can find someone who can do it
What I need advice on is what to put in the front, to replace the blown BA's which I never liked. I am thinking the alpine R-types, because they are rated RMS 100, and I am afraid the BA's blew because of a lower rating (probably around 70, which is average at that price point). As noted above, the front gets 200w from the amp. I heard a pair of S types in BB, and they sounded pretty good.
The alpine S types are only rated at 80 rms
To tell the truth, I can't even remember whether the fronts are straight 6.5 coax's or 6.5/tweeter components! Its been a few years since I had them put in (by sound advice in Tampa, which screwed up the car pretty well during the install, and when I had the speakers checked recently there was some duct tape bs on one speaker-- but that's another story).
So, what do you guys recommend for front speakers in this setup? Budget up to around $250, but less is better (and more is possible, if necessary). One other thing: the BA's never sounded good to me. They sounded to mid-rangy to my ear, and a bit tinny. I would prefer a more "scooped" sound, with more emphasis on mid-bass. Sorry, can't remember the model BA's, but they probably cost a couple of hundred bucks.
One last thing, for the curious. I took the car to BB to have the work done, they couldn't do it because of the custom sub install in the back, which they did not have the skills to dismantle and reconfigure, in order to access the rear speaker area. I have yet to find a local custom audio installer in the Boston area who can do it, although one would think they would be myriad.
