Need Advice On what the next upgrade will be!

I'm confident SPL Coil only means it's lighter weight (possibly shorter WW) and tighter in the gap. SPL application would indicate high power for 3 second bursts... I wouldn't count on "spl coils" to indicate anything about long term thermal power handling, only performance at that application. That being said the audio of that vid sounds like the subs are bottoming out.

Those Zenon amps really shine at .5 ohm. I'd lean towards .5 personally though keep in mind it is much more strenuous on your electrical and amp.
And you!!! Would be correct, please excuse my stupidity for the reply lol. I was looking at them today, and yeah, they are TOTALLY bottoming out.. The suspension has been beat to hell and I am the third owner of them with the current cones. Just more of a reason to upgrade, and I assume the SAZ 1500D is using a Zenon board, as per the Z in SAZ :| but I could be wrong

your subs are deffinately bottoming out..
Yeah ur right, the suspension is starting to give out more quickly than I had hoped //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Here you wana hear what happens when the suspension exceeds X-Max and slams the coil into the back plate? :41 seconds in, rest of the video is crap..

So with wanting to upgrade, should I even bother re-coning these SAs? or just sell them and the box and move on

Z does not stand for Zenon, but they are Zenon boards. From my experience with 1500, 2K, and 3K they really impress at .5 ohm nominal....have a solid electrical before you try because they really **** up a lot of current to make power at that impedence.

"SPL" sub = low mass, generally low excursion, short bursts @ 50-65hz. I would bet you could burp these with far more than 1KW in a properly tuned box >50hz. Long story short SPL coils are probably not the best option for daily driving..they're for SPL burps.

Still though, grab good single 18 and that'll be a good come-up.

I heard it in the first video that's why I mentioned it.... I've heard it before too, I use motors now that don't bottom out the coil, but slapping the tripple joint on the top plate sounds almost as harsh. Are they functioning at low power? I suspect a lower tuned box or proper use of subsonic filter would prevent that bottoming out. Really if you're hitting x-mech on these you're doinitwrong. If they're moving that much your port is unloading and you're getting almost no output anyway. Personally I'm not a big fan of suspension so stiff you could stand on it just so that you can play 20hz below tuning at full power without breaking a woofer. I'd rather tune the box to control down to where I need or use HPF appropriately.

The subsonic filter was off for this video, The song came form the thread in here called "You think you can play low?" The answer for my system is.. yes and no lol. Its only this song at the frequency that they bottom out. The box is 34Hz and the ports arnt all that big.. :\ Not sure why the box unloads and the subs loose control so easily //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Couple of things I wanted to add, i'm looking to go for high SQ this upgrade.. With my amp @ 1ohm or .5.. Purely for SQ and quality Hz, Here are the choices I am considering (please add what ever you think would be better)

IA Death Penalty 18 run @ 1ohm

Sundown Z v.3 18 @ 1 or .5ohm

DC Level 4 18 @ 1 or .5ohm

I really want to aim for SQ, I was in a friends car today (07 WRX) and she said she had a stock sub in the back. It was a perfect balance of subsonic frequencies and vocals from the mids and tweets. For a bone stock system, I was shocked, and it really made me feel like my current setup is ****.. because well, it is.. So I want to start with the woofer, because I like bass, but I want to build a complete SQ system.. Not just throw a sub in and have the stock speakers.. The more I think about it, the less I like these SA 12s //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif (not saying they are bad, they just arnt daily with the current coil)

I don't think any of those really fit the description of SQ woofer. Really if you want things to sound really balanced with your fronts you probably don't need more than a single 12 or 10 even. JBL GTi MkII is a very highly regarded SQ woofer that can handle some power, old Eclipse Ti as well, most of the old Adire stuff, and most of the TC stuff (particularly LMS and most built on the TC9 motor) fall into the same category. I can only think of a few 18's that really fit that description and they're generally VHTF and expensive if you can find them. Probably more I'm not thinking of but it's late and I'm pretty tired.

1ohm is supperior SQ to .5 ohm.
