Need advice on Sound Quality

Hi guys, I'm a newbie and don't know very much about car audio systems. But I am pretty picky about the sound quality of my music. I would like your advice on what components offer the best sound quality while at the same time provide good output. I Know alpine type X's are supposed to be good, and I was also recommended by crutchfield for my Scion Xa Polk audioMMC6500 for $299, but I have not heard either. I am willing to go up to $300 but if there is something cheaper with a good sound the better. Thanks for putting up with another Newbie.
