need advice on budget home/garage stereo system

I am looking to buy a stereo system for my garage and possibly inside my home. I need it to be able to play an ipod either by a dock or usb port, etc. I have looked at the traditional stereo systems like aiwa, jvc, ..., that are fairly cheap and do not seem that good of quality. The budget is around 200 or less. It would be nice for it to sound pretty good, but due to budget constraints doesn't have to be great. There are a few questions I have.

1) Would it be worth it to try and find a good receiver and two good (bookshelf) speakers to piece together a fairly decent system vs. buying an whole system like a 50 dollar aiwa. I think it is worth it, but are very new to home audio.

2) What are some decent brands of receivers and speakers I should be looking at that are in my price range. Keep it mind, they don't have to be great, just looking for the best bang for my buck.

get a 7.1 receiver with zone 2. so you can run 5.1 in your house and a 2 speaker setup in your garage.
