Need advice about which speakers to buy for Pontiac G8

Hello,

I own a 2008 Pontiac G8 GT. Here is my setup so far:

JL 1000/1v2 slash amp - Details

JL 300/4v2 slash amp - Details

JL 12w7 sub in a high output ported box - Details

JL Cleansweep CL441dsp - Details

1,000 watt VMAX deep cycle battery CT 1000 - Details

PAC-200 Battery Isolator 200 Amp - Details

High Output Alternator: 275 Amp, 200 idle - Details of similar alternator

Big Three Wire Upgrade

The only thing missing from my setup is a SPEAKER UPGRADE!!! I know nothing about car audio speakers. The 2008 G8 GT comes with a stock 11 speaker Blaupunkt system. The 2 speakers in the rear doors are crackling so those need to be replaced at the very least. I am thinking that I could upgrade my front 2 speakers (since they matter the most) and take my stock front speakers and replace them in the rear door slots to replace the 2 crackling speakers.

Can I have some recommendations on which speakers to purchase and why? Keep in mind that they will be powered by the JL 300/4 and will have the Cleansweep cleaning up the signals.

Thanks!

John

You need to post up how much you want to spend and what size the speaker's are or what size you will be able to accomodate.

There are quite a few good sets less than $200, a couple near $100

Sorry for not mentioning that. The doors have 6.5" speakers. I don't care how much I spend...I just want them to sound really good and balance with the rest of the system.

Also, if the rear door speakers are crackling, could I swap the front door speakers to the back and just get new speakers in the front? Or is it worth getting new speakers in the rear doors as well?

I'm pretty sure it has 6.5"s up front.
Bridge that 300/4 for a pair of Boston Acoustics SPZ60's...

Here's a look at the Bostons...

I am still not too clear on some of the technical details of car audio. So you're saying to just use my amp for 2 of the speakers? Is it better to just bridge it for the 2 front speakers versus not bridging it and running it to the 2 front door speakers and 2 rear door speakers? Or were you just suggesting to bridge it based on the fact that I was considering only upgrading the speakers up front?

The front speakers are, by far, the most important speakers in your "system". In my opinion, you'd get the best results if you use the 300/4 to power a single pair of really nice components (that's why I recommended it). I also figured price wasn't a huge factor, and that's why I mentioned the Boston SPZ60's. And yes, if the speakers in your front doors will fit, there's no reason why you can't put them in the rear.

The Bostons should pair pretty nicely with the JL amplifier too. They're rated for 150 watts rms @ 3 ohms per side, and that's the exact amount of power your amplifier is capable of producing. Matching the rms power exactly isn't nearly as big a deal as many people think, and I'm sure those Bostons can handle A LOT more than 150 watts per side, but I think they'd do well for you...

Thanks for the advice. I didn't think price was going to be an issue since I didn't realize 2 speakers could get that expensive...but it looks like the Boston's you recommended cost over $1,000 for a pair. That's a little pricey given that I just sunk so much money into everything else. The technicians at the audio shop said that just putting the cleansweep into the equation can make the factory speakers sound worlds better. But since my rear speakers are blown, I should definitely upgrade the front 2 and replace the rear with the stock front two. Can you suggest a pair of speakers for 300 or less for now that would match up with my amp? I can consider those boston's you recommended for down the road.

Thanks!

The Bostons can be had for less than $600 from several different ebay sellers.

If you want sub-$300 speakers that still sound good, look at the Image Dynamics CTX65cs.

CTX65CS - Image Dynamics 6.5" Component Speaker System

If you're willing to drop a little more, check out the CXS62 v.2.

CXS62 V.2 - Image Dynamics 6.5" 2 ohm Component System

Those Bostons are extremely nice, though. The Polk Audio SR6500 is a really good set too...
