need a ton more info. start with vehicle specifics - year/make/model/trim

then describe the expectations of the owner

discuss who will do the install and what their experience level is

i can build very nice sounding, musical systems (speakers, amps, sub) for under $600 but the equipment is used and there is at least 40 hours of install involved.

Also, a list of what they want to buy would be nice...

Head unit, speakers, amp(s), sub, enclosure, wire.....something to give us an idea what all they are wanting to try and pick up.

He has a Bmw, not sure what series. He wants it good quality but also wants loud. I will be installing it and im not the best out there but im pretty good for being so young. We just need it under 600

Just pick up a cheap Pioneer or Alpine(or similar) just get the features he needs more so then what he wants. As for the sub stage, something small would likely be just fine with out upgrading the stock speakers. You will reach their limit with a small sub stage in most cases.

I would look at maybe a single 10 or 12 in a nice ported enclosure. Maybe 500-1000rms at most for the sub stage. He will likely find himself wanting to upgrade the mids/highs after that install though.

Craigslist and the classifieds can be your best friend when it comes to used equipment. Like rabbit said, a single ported 10 or 12 would be fine. Maybe even 2 8s.

I'm thinking 2 JBL GTO804s on about 400 or so watts would sound nice ported. They're known for their SQ, and two on low to moderate power would probably blend well with the stock system.

As for power, look for something used in his power range. That's your best bet on getting a quality amp.
