Supposed to? How so?

25% coverage is only necessarry when trying to reduce harmonics distortion in sheet metal.. Thats easy.. Hell, duct tape can do that much.

Most applications require much more coverage though, especially for those of us that have aftermarket sound systems with any serious type of power.

You would be surprised how many people call me up complaining that they had to remove the entire interior of their car to apply more material when the 25% coverage thing failed to work in their application.

I thought normal mat had some crazy deminishing return and was pretty pointless after 25-50%%, for a quality mat.

and mat is a crappy barrier.

barriers are meant to cover 100%

mat is 25% (in center of each panel, not 25% of the entire car)

Right?

IDK I've seen so many threads and each one says something different //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crying.gif.ec0ebefe590df0251476573bc49e46d8.gif

so what am i supposed to do?

Well, the 25% coverage plan has gain mass popularity for sure but it is limited to specific goals.

It is true, a high quality damping mat will require less total coverage than a lower quality mat, however the 25% plan is only good for reducing the harmonic, resonant frequency of the sheet metal, and considering that Speakers, subs, and other mechanically generated airborn noise stimulation are well out site the resonant frquency of the sheet metal more MIGHT be needed depending on the intensity of the energy being placed on the panel.

To make a statement like 25% coverage is all anyone needs is very misleading, and really only addresses certain aspecs of vibration reduction.

Consider how much vibration reduction and panel flex would be accomplish by covering 25% of the hood of a panel van that has 140 db pumping through it.

Not much. The resonant frequency would certainly be reduced a great deal which would be great if thats all you were trying to do.

Take more material unfortunately.

now, on the floor? Hell 25% might be perfect.

Load up on a havy vinyl or lead barrier and you are golden! (they key here though is to load up with 100% coverage)

Remeber, this is a car audio board. We don't use vibration dapmers to simply reduce harmonics.

I want to get rid of road noise and engine noise, and increasing my system's loudness/quality wouldn't hurt either. But all I've got are 12'' cvr kicker subs (w/ 600w rms) and 6x9 jl audio evolutions (w/ 75w rms). I've never been to a competition but I doubt I go anywheres near 140 db //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

please tell me what to buy and how much to cover //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I've got a mazda protege sedan.

cheaper is better but i'd like to make a pretty big difference!

(what ss products should i buy)

I can tell you what most of our customers go with but in general you have to examine the intensity of the vibrations on the sheet metal.

Some areas will only need 25% as stated above, some may need more.

For a car of that size start with about 80 sq feet of material through out the entire car. That will probably be more than enough for acar of that size, but with the subs I'd hit the trunk and roof pretty good.

To start reducinteh road nosie and such, go with a noise barrier. We sell Luxury LIner Pro which is awesome, but Don also has a great combination of products that will work well.

Cascade makes some great barriers as well. Id say you might need about 6-7 sheets of Luxury Liner or Luxury Liner Pro to do the entire thing.

Firewall, floor, trunk floor and quarter panels/wheel wells. That should just about do it.

Oh, one thing that many people are doing that is getting great results is using a gallon of our noise coating Spectrum under the hood. Works great for engine noise and road noise.. You'd be surprised..

ANT

ok so, spectrum can withstand the heat from the engine during the summer?

think I should coat the entire engine bay or just the hood and outside of the firewall?

it says its water based, does that mean if it ever gets wet it'll come off???

is it watery?? like..will I have to take my hood off to coat it or will it be able to adhere to a hood propped up while on the car? (70 or so degree angle)

what is the difference between spectrum and sludge? sludge is just thicker//better?

how much will a gallon coat?

Does the barrier have to cover 100% of the car or is covering the key areas ok?

should I put barrier in the doors?

soo.. damplifer all over 100% of car, luxury liner on top of that on firewall & floor of the entire car. spec sludge on the bottom side of the hood and outside of the firewall. Should i do the sides of the engine bay?

Would it be worth it to do certain easily accessible spots under the car? or would that not do anything.

Will the noise just go around and come in through the doors//sides?

what do you use to apply the luxury liner? is it peal n stick like the other mat?

do I NEED the spray gun to use spec sludge? or could I use a paintbrush or something?
