My biggest problem: the paper

Hey at least Car Audio is cheaper than car performance.

When i first got my car i wanted to make it fast, but realized that exhaust, headers, and intake would cost me about $900 for only 15hp. I then did the opposite and made my car heavier by buying two 12" CVR's, profile amp, headunit, and wiring kit for $375. Been addicted ever since...

Yeah getting paper and blowing it on car audio is tough at this time. I have been saving for my system and whenever I get close something always happens. example: friday we had 9 lay offs and they cut everyones hours back to 32 per week.

I hear ya, See the company I work for has a contract with the mill and they wanted to put all of us 32hr //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif for November and December...The very time of the year most people spend the most money... Be we got lucky they really wanted to save "said amount of money for those two months" so we took all

the left over vacation and sick days for those two months and saved them what they were lookin for. And they let us have our 40hr week back Thank God

read up and learn how to install everything yourself will save you a lot. buying online brands, or used on here is much cheaper than buying in stores. just be sure to do your research first.

still, i've got 3 or 4 grand in my system, all installed myself. thats counting the electrical upgrades and sound deadener though. about to throw another 1500 or so at it on a bigger amp, 2nd 18, and another 300 dollar battery.

Save your money, and don't waste time buying equipment you never plan on using.

Amazing deals, assuming you come across them and can recognize them, can also help.

I've flipped a few crazy "She's pregnant", "I'm broke", and "Need bail money" type sales from here onto Craigslist and made some extra cash to go toward my habit.

But yeah, avoid impulse buys *glances across room at 6 EHSQ8's, 10" Type R, DD CF dust cap, and XXX motor*, *shakes head*.

Exactly what I had to do //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif The commercial equivalent of my amps would have been somewhere around $4000, the speakers around $2000...go DIY instead, end up with a little over $3000 in the whole thing, without a turntable...
DIY rocks //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'm in about $4,200 with no DIY, all by getting deals on the used market. I still need a better TT and new ESL panels in my speakers but the RETAIL for my system was.... over $12,000 when new. SO you can see there is some major depreciation over 5-10 years and the technology really hasn't changed much since 1985, no matter what the manufacturers want you to believe.

The same goes for Car audio, buy used top line gear and you'd be way ahead of buying brand new mid-level stuff.

'85, pfft...most of the technology I have hasn't changed since Prohibition //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

The TT I want is $2500ish...I've seen some great DIY 'tables, but I don't have the tools right now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif If I have a drill press, oscillating sander, and a good supply of acrylic, then maybe...

*Cough* *looks around...* I could build you parts that you need Jim... They would be really easy to ship. How thick of acrylic do you need?

The bearing I'd use is rated for an 80mm platter //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Importing it from Scheu in Germany is somewhere around $500...and Teres Audio doesn't really price things for the DIY market any more.

Maybe that's next fall's project...Chris from Teres Audio had a good writeup of how to build a plinth filled with mineral oil and sand, isolating the armboard/tonearm from the main bearing, but it required working with aluminum square tube and bar stock and I don't have that capability here //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif
