Music being dirty?

A member at a local meet would ask people if the song is "clean" before he will let them demo it on his system. He also mentioned a certain song someone played clipping his subs. So what exactly would make a song clean or dirty? Is distrortion added when people remaster or bass boost songs? Or does is have anything to do with the volume its recorded at?

Generally, the reference level that its boosted at. People assume "0" is clean, and it isnt. I dont go above -5 on reference level when I boost or alter stuff

So doing a plot spectrum on audacity shows the reference level right?
