mtx 801d gains........

i have an mtx 801d amp and noticed something weird. when turning up the gains, it doesn't produce much sound until almost all the way up. when the gain is about 70-80% it sounds real low but when turned from about 90 up to 100% it gets real loud. i noticed it with my brother's hifonics brutus1000d also. it's like u had to have the gain all the way up for it to pound. what could be the problem? i had some pos boss amps before and the gain would only need to be turned to about 1/3 or 1/4 and it got loud. anyone???

check to make sure you setting them correctly, at least the generic way. vol on head unit to 3/4 of max and then turn gains on the amp up until audible distortion and then back it off. also make sure that the sub/non-fading output on the head unit is up some.
