More output from focal flax?

Hey guys I am currently running two focal flax 10 inch woofers in a fairly small enclosure - about .65 cu ft.

There just isn't enough sustained output - good on the punches but not on the continual bass notes.

Wondering if I will see better output by modifying the box to be about 1.15 cu ft and porting the box according to the specs supplied in the manual?

Running off of a Mosconi gladen one 1000 watt mono block at 4 ohms. So each sub is receiving the full 300 watts rms their rated for.

Thanks

Jason

Build a better box. Without even looking at specs, .65 cubic feet for 2 10's is too small. Unless you mean .65 /sub but even still this is the low end of the scale for sealed 10's generally speaking. A sealed enclosure even larger than the size you mentioned, or go ported and even bigger if you have the space.

Remember to account for displacement, and bracing. Sound is in the box...the speaker can only do what the enclosure allows.

Good luck!

Unfortunately in my case the only thing I can do is modify the current box as there just simply isn't room to go any bigger.

I meant .65 per subwoofer. Now what I can do is remove the amp from the box and increase my space to about 1.2 cu ft.

This sub is designed for tight spaces so a sealed box over .88 cu ft isn't even in the spec sheet.

If I go 1.2 cu ft per sub should I port them or leave them sealed?

Jason, being a Focal dealer I know exactly what you are saying, you've got incredible equipment but just for the wrong applications if I'm understanding you correctly. If you are talking about the long sustained notes like in most rap and dubstep/trap music then the Focal subs aren't going to do that because that's not what they were designed to do. The bigger 1.25cu ft box will get you closer to that but I fear it's not going to be exactly what you want. Don't get me wrong though because the Flax will go deep but like all Focal subs they are designed to be fast and accurate not slow and sloppy so to speak. The Flax is though the closest to that though without breaking the bank.

Honestly, after fiddling around a whole bunch, I am so close to what I feel I want from the subs. I tried down firing them rather than up firing, and that has helped allot - I feel like if I port them, I'd be right around where I want them to be.

See the thing is I absolutely love these focal subs - just the warmth in the base and the openness of the notes. So I think I'd be happy with porting them with the extra cubic footage.

See I am in a very grey area of car audio - I am an Sq guy with just a little bit of a lust for spl. The one thing I don't want is bass that just dominates all the highs and the lows.

I appreciate the help guys, and I will sure get back to yall with an update of how they are when ported!

As a focal dealer do you have any experience with porting focal subwoofers? Do they sound alright?

That woofer is a **** poor design if that's the case..

Sell those overpriced subs and get you some idq woofers..

what are your thoughts on the IDQ 10D2 V.4

Can I wire these as 2 ohms to the amplifier?

My mosconi amp can do 1000 watts at 2 ohms or 600 watts at 4

i think you got some poor recommendations for a dealer who just conned you on some good products that are way over priced..

start for the basics. give us some measurements and we can help you find something thats much better suited for your application.

the IDQ woofer are great soudning woofers with a good deal of output and use pretty small boxes to boot.

with that space and power if you could do a single 12" ID max you would love it.. they need about 1.3 cubes per 12 the dual 4 ohm would wire to two ohm. or you could do 2 IDQ 10s in .8 the dual 2ohm woofers and get excellent results..

you'd want to port those. The output not all that great sealed. I have an IDQ 10 in my lady's car on 600 rms and its lackluster. A W6 sounds much better on the same power both in sound quality, musical range hits high and low easily clean and much louder in the same sealed box from A to B swaps i've done with the two. Difference was very noticeable. Sealed box specs is very close to yours. 0.7 cubes.
