Mirroring (Android) Phone Screen for Maps When Using Navigation to Pioneer AVH Screen

I have a pioneer receiver with a Double DIN screen. It does not have an HDMI input but does have RCA AV inputs. I have a brake switch bypass switch installed also, not for watching videos or anything like that. I had to upgrade the firmware and it won't work unless the brake switch is connected or bypassed.

From time to time I use a mapping app on my phone and the phone is connected to the receiver via bluetooth to listen to music and I get driving directions as well. It would be nice to glance at the bigger screen of the double DIN display to view the map as I'm driving since it is closer to my field of view and also larger and should be easier to read than the screen on my phone.

I see that Bluetooth isn't for video although for maps these will be almost static images. I also see that I can get an AV to HDMI converter and then and HDMI to micro USB cable. I have also seen some RCA to micro USB cables as well. They are cheaper, but, they consist just of the connectors and the cable. I don't know what type of signal would be coming out of the USB port. I suppose this is controlled be the mirroring app I'm using.

Can anyone educate me on how to best go about doing this? It would be nice to do it wirelessly, but, it doesn't look like that is an option. I don't generally use navigation, but, it is a nice feature and using the double DIN screen would be nice.

Thanks

I have not heard of being able to bluetooth video (in a car anyway). Even in the house you'd need one of those dongles for your TV (chromecast or similar) and IMO they're pretty jittery.

A head unit with Android Auto should do what you're after for navigation and music, and I'm hoping that some day someone will write some homebrew code that allows true screen mirroring. I know the ability to do screen mirroring is there in the hardware but the risk of some fuckwit trying to watch and reply to youtube videos on the dash while trying to drive then suing somebody will keep any of the big companies from attempting to develop full functioning mirroring or video.

Get the f*ck out of here with that stupid "First!" bull$hit. What did you accomplish with this besides looking like a moron?

Hey tmort, what model is your Pioneer receiver and also the make/model of the phone you are trying to use? Also, welcome to the forum, I am in Grand Rapids as well.

Bluetooth as a protocol doesnt allow streaming video.

What he needs is USB access and a device with Android Auto for this to work.

There's a way to do it, even wirelessly, but the difficulty depends on the specs of the devices that are being used. If your receiver and phone are both MHL compatible, it would be too easy. Post up what head unit and phone that you are using and I will see what I can come up with.

I replied to the email from this thread, but, it looks like it didn't post.

Here is the phone and radio info.

Hi the phone is a Moto G5 running Android 7.0. I think it that model is only about a year old.

I did find a discussion about it on a Motorola discussion board. Not MHL compatible, but, can cast using Screencast to some devices anyway.

MHL support

Does the Moto g5s plus had mhl support?

Can we use a mhl adapter to mirror mobile screen to tv?

I have this question too

No. It doesn't support MHL TV out.

But, you can wireless cast using Google Chromecast device.

Best Regards, Syed Zeeshan.

The car radio is a Pioneer AVH X4800BS. I don't see MHL listed in the specs. I don't know what MHL stands for.

I've heard of Chromecast in relation to mirroring to TVs. I don't know if the receiver would be anything like that or if maybe some adapter needs to be used.

Thanks

It looks like Chromecast is wifi, which this car receiver doesn't have.

I also was seeing a post somewhere where someone mentioned they could see why manufacturers don't allow streaming videos, but, they wondered if anyone might be able to come up with and app and/or firmware modification that would allow it.

What I'd like to see is only maps for navigation. The image does change from time to time, but, it is basically a still image. It is just a matter of how often it gets refreshed to keep the map and position of the car current.

Can still images be transmitted via bluetooth? If so couldn't you simply do this at some sort of set rate that would keep a map up to date, but, would be far too slow for video. I suppose people might then start watching slide shows while driving or something.
