Midrange Speakers, 80hz - 3.5khz

?????
I'm looking for a pair of 4 ohm mids, that will be crossed over to play 80hz - 3.5khz. I'll be sending them 40 watts each, and probably stepping up to 100 watts in the near future. They need to be suitable for use in the doors (good off-axis response), and blend well with the stereo in my sig (they'll be replacing the Profile 6 1/2 inchers). Size doesn't matter too much, but a shallow mounting depth would be appreciated (I'll probably be fiberglassing them into my doors). The cheaper the better, but I'm willing to spend around $100 if necessary. Hope this isn't too picky...

Don't expect much midbass output from them......
I'm not looking for tons of midbass, and if necessary I can cross them over at 120hz, and have the REs play up to that. Would a pair of 5.25" Dayton Classics be good? I'd go with the References, but if I paired them with 4 ohm tweeters (the References are 8 ohm) how would that work?

If you went with the Dayton, you'd want it to be a little more off axis. If you went with the Vifa, you'd want it to be more on-axis.

Of the two; I'd probably go with the Vifa.
