Mercury Spill at my school...

when I was elementary school, we were relocated so they could build a new school. We were relocated to an older high school.

Needless to say, AFTER ONE YEAR of us going into the music room, they figured out it was LOADED with ASBESTOS.

Needless to say, I never went into that room again. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Actually, elemental mercury is not poisonous to humans. It is not bio-available to our systems. You could literally swallow elemental mercury and see little to no effect.

BUT, organic-mercury compounds can be HIGHLY poisonous.

*cough* Toxicology major *cough*

Not that I am questioning you, but what is the difference?

the element mercury is a pure, 100% mercury blob. Organic mercury, I assuming, is not 100% mercury, but a combination a few things (majority of it mercury) however the concotion is what makes it posionous.

Am i close?

lmfao..

Our chemistry teacher in high school got some out and played around with it to show us, never directly touched it though. Cool stuff.

They have officially closed down the entire building for the semester, hopefully they wont be changing the time of my classes, if they do imma be very very angry

The Science Building will be closed for the spring 2008 semester.
As announced previously, elemental mercury has been detected on the third

floor, and Concord has contracted a professional hazardous waste disposal

company for remediation. The building is being closed to permit the hazmat

firm to complete its search and removal process.

Our office is working with the Natural Sciences Division to establish

alternate locations for classes and faculty offices. The plan of action is

to be in place by the end of this week, so students, faculty and staff are

urged to consult University media and posted notices about the revised term

schedule.
got another email from my t/thurs professor saying this

We are SO NOT cancelling class.
See you Thursday, in Admin 321.

Call or email if you have questions.
yay

Just an update for you guys who care, upon removing the floor boards in some of the math offices there were pools of mercury balls laying on the ground. also the maximum level acceptable by OSHA is .05 on some meter, and everyhwere in that building is ~ 2.0 ... now screening faculty for mercury. Some was even found in there homes and vehicles
