MechMan alt problem again?

also, my external reg for my mechman alt made my engine act weird like it would make a funny noise and alter it a bit and it would pump out more smoke from the exaust LOL.. when i took it out everything went to normal again.. might be just the external reg.. send it back for an internal one..
that defets the point. he can set it to lets say 15v and the computer will always make it 13.8v. theres power lost there

oh... well all i know is i can clearly see my tensioner move a 1/2 inch
so this is obviously a mechanical problem. im guessing that the tensioner is moving up (more tension) instead of down. if thats happening then the alt is so hard to turn that the belt is being streched out then yanked once it gets tight enough. this would make your alt pulsate and change voltage. if thats a problem with the belt, tensioner, or the alt... i have no idea. trial and error?

when you turn the ext reg off does that belt problem go away?

yeah it dose. but theres no power. do i just take it to my dodge shop to fix the tensioner or can it be done with my skill level. i installed the alt myslef

ah ha. so the alt isnt working as hard and the tension problem goes away. that is a good sign. it means the alt is good. you may need to try a few differant sizes in belts b4 you get it right. i really dont know about a stiffer tensioner or how hard it would be to install. a smaller belt will make the tensioner put more... tension on the belt. try to start at a lower voltage in the mean time. slowly raise the voltage till the slipping comes back then back it off a little.

Just a thought...but you may have to get creative and install/get someone to install an idler pulley near your alt to get better belt wrap, this will most likely mean a longer belt but if done right should greatly increase the grip on the alt's pulley. Im in the process of doing this.

Well I would say something is wrong with the alt/regulator if it stops doing it when you turn the regulator off.
If it was a problem with the tensioner/belt it should be doing it all the time.
wrong, the more load you present to the alt, the harder it is to turn. no load and the alt spins very freely.
