After I got everything hooked up I fired up the new system for a preliminary demo (this was also when I realized that my left tweeter wasn't playing). It looks like this HU is the same as my 7892 was as far as the preouts go. With the 7892 I always had to have the HU's sub level adjustment maxed out, and the sub amp gain maxed out to get a decent amount of sub output. This HU is going to be the same way. I had everything set flat as that's the way you're supposed to have everything set prior to using the imprint device. With all the settings set to neutral I can barely hear the sub at all, and I certainly can't feel it. I'm guessing that after I set the system up using the imprint, I'm probably going to end up cranking the sub output and the amp gain in order to get the sub output I like, and I'm not even a basshead.
On a positive note, these Illusion mids sound pretty decent. They're warm and smooth with a decent amount of midbass punch, especially considering I don't have them high passed yet so they're getting subwoofer signals, and they got a little muddy sounding at high volume levels (I assume due to not being crossed over yet). I can't wait to hear how they sound once I get them crossed over. I was a little nervous about these mids because I've never heard them before. They definitely sound better than the JL XR650 mids they replaced, but to be fair, I don't know if they're a better driver, or if the JL's had poor midbass performance because the doors they were mounted in weren't deadened or sealed. I took great care deadening and sealing (as well as I could anyway, I don't think can ever be completely sealed) my doors this time around.
All I'm waiting on now is for my replacement crossover to arrive tomorrow, then I can go through the imprint setup. I'm also waiting on an Ai-net connector to show up so I can plug my satellite receiver into the HU. If both show up tomorrow, I'll be completely done tomorrow.
